Just saw this come across the wire. Didn't even know he was battling cancer.

Pulled many, many a tennis story (and occasional other DC-area sports stories) with his name on it.

That is awful...so young and so quick, Geez. One of the most recognizable bylines out there. What a testimony from Federer in the obit. Awful. RIP.

Seems odd to refer to him as a "national" AP writer. I see the byline, and I think "international."

I found many of his stories difficult to trim. A hallmark of a great writer.

Didn't realize he was that young -- he covered tennis for the AP for about as long as I've been pulling his stories for sports pages. And that's a very well-written obit with nice tributes from the sports and journalism worlds.

A good sportswriter who died far too young. RIP.
