I’d wait through entire Sportscenter blocks of highlights just to get to those stand-ups of him on football and Gammons and Kurkjian on baseball and to hear those sign-offs. John Clayton…ESPN.

In a world where swagger and hot takes are valued more than insight, it was always refreshing to hear no-nonsense info from Clayton. The guy was dialed in and never made it about himself. Always appreciated that.

This is horrible news to wake up to. John was an outstanding reporter and terrific road companion when I was on the Pats-NFL beat in the late '80s. He did so well on TV because he was always just himself, which that commercial wisely plays off for its humor.
