Jill Clayburgh, an Oscar-nominated actress known for portraying strong, independent women, died on Friday at her home in Lakeville, Conn. She was 66.

The cause was chronic leukemia, with which she had lived for 21 years, her husband, the playwright David Rabe, said.

Damn. She was hot in Silver Streak, among other flicks. Sad to hear this. Seemed a classy dame.

Re: RIP Jill Clayburgh

An icon of the Me Decade and a portrayer of women trying to deal with the new feminine landscape. R.I.P.

She was a classic chick. Loved her in Silver Streak, Semi-Tough, Dirty Sexy Money. RIP.

Damn, too many people from my childhood seem to be dying lately. Makes me feel old.

Couldn't have said it better, Dan. Thank you.

RIP to a fine actress.

Agreed. I believe her "An Unmarried Woman" colleague Cliff Gorman died of leukemia, too. RIP.

Loved her in "Starting Over", from 1979, where Burt Reynolds was her new flame.

You know what blows?
Important stuff like this will never make the cut on the "entertainment" shows.
Too interested in what Kim Kardashian is wearing, or whatever.
Jill Clayburgh was a huge star in the 70s, and deservedly so. Fabulous actress.

Good actress but never thought she fit the bill of Barbara Jane Bookman that Dan Jenkins described.

Really not a criticism of her - more so those that cast her in role.

What did you think?

Was very sorry to learn of her death. She had and exuded class. RIP. And Twoback, you are absolutely right: Entertainment media will not touch this but should. And they should just start ignoring reality "stars" -- but won't (unfortunately!!).

She was great on Dirty, Sexy Money. It was a travesty that show only lasted two seasons. I'm convinced the writer's strike prevented it from getting a following.

Nice piece in the New York Times today. The "Luna" flick was a strange one.
