Both western New York and southern Ontario. There weren't many Toronto news anchors who were more well-known in these parts than Irv was (same could be said for Clip Smith, Rick Azar, Don Postles, Biff Beeper, Dave Thomas, Promo the Robot, Tom Jolls, you get the picture). I can still hear some of the phrases Irv used: "Buffalo smoke eaters", "Erie County lawmakers", "pistol packing punks"....

**** yeah, can still remember the one where Irv's walking through the newsroom and asks, "How do you get spaghetti sauce out of a tie?" and everyone yells, "Ask Irv!"

Just before the start of the late-night broadcast, they always had an Irv-narrated PSA: "It's 11 o'clock. Do you know where your children are?"

I learned the definition of the word "yeg" by watching Irv and Eyewitness News. They also specialized in stories on bodies dumped in car trunks after a gangland-related slaying.

Just before the start of the late-night broadcast, they always had an Irv-narrated PSA: "It's 11 o'clock. Do you know where your children are?"

Everybody in southern Ontario knew that PSA. Irv was always on top of the latest crap out of Mayor Jimmy Griffin's office or a shut down on the Father Baker Bridge.

At the end of his final newscast, when Irv chokes up while telling his viewers, "You made all of my dreams come true," is gold. ... I never heard of the guy before yesterday. But it was great reading his obit story and then all the tributes.

I think it started with Irv. Tom Jolls' voice is the one I remember too. I loved him doing the "Weather Outside" in a blizzard.

Jolls' succeeded Dave Thomas, who went to Philadelphia, as the WKBW weatherman and the host of "Rocketship 7." Thomas' son is David Boreanaz of "Bones" and "Seal Team" fame.

I remember Jolls more as Commander Tom, but there were loads of other very familiar names in Buffalo TV those days: Dan Neavereth, Nolan Johannes, Wes Goforth, Ed Kilgore, Susan Banks, Carol Jasen.....
