Howie Schwab’s show “stump the Schwab” was one of my favorite shows of 2000s

Only 63. I've know a lot of guys who "are good at trivia," but none of them had the instant recall of so many facts across as many sports and eras as Howie. And yeah, what ESPN did to him and several other key people who basically built ESPN.com was criminal. But it's the business in which we live.

RIP. I guess God needed some extensive sports knowledge, given how much he decides who wins and loses.

I would contend there has been a Schwab in every sports department in the country, roughly 1975-2010. Maybe not with his reach, but a person just like that, and who got little fanfare for what was brought to the table.
If not on national sports, then local, ie last Podunk High football title, no hitter, ect.

I always appreciated people like that - the "institutional knowledge" folks. Mark Knoller of CBS News was one of those guys - he kept track of Presidential golf rounds. Worked with a guy who was the "go to" guy for stuff with the Oregon Legislature.

Saw quite a few "Stump the Schwab" episodes on ESPN. He knew his ****, but was never arrogant about it. Seemed like a real good egg. RIP.

In my experience, that Schwab-like guy was also the one guy in the newsroom who would read wire stories aloud to the group, unasked.
