RIP?

I'm not of the proper vintage to fully experience Kissinger other than him being the guy every president went to for advice. Will folks tell me why he was considered such a sonofabitch?

Well, he enabled and facilitated a lot of Nixon's really most horrible ideas. He tried, and somewhat succeeded, to build up enough plausible deniability under the general theme he tried to talk Nixon out of most of the worst of it, but the goo was still on his lips.

He was a practitioner of the most ruthless kind of realpolitik. When it came to exploiting the Sino-Soviet split and creating detente between the US and China, that was a net good. When it came to plotting coups and supporting military juntas -- all in the name of freedom, democracy, and the American way, mind you -- it created a lot of death and suffering for questionable gain. Of course, in a geopolitical environment when George Kennan's message of containment was flattened to "every inch of territory we or our friends don't control is a commie victory and a threat to the free world", it's little wonder that kind of mindset was successful and celebrated.

The secret life of Henry Kissinger

I don't know ... there was a picture of President Carter at Rosalynn's funeral that makes one wonder. One can truly live too long.

Those were unsettling pictures to me. Obviously of news value. And to be expected as he's 99 and has been in hospice for almost a year.

I've seen that "look" pretty recently right before my mom passed. First thing I thought of when I saw the Cater pics.

Totally unsettling. Biden looked genuinely saddened.

Here they are in happier times
