RIP Hal Ketchum

At age 67 of dementia. His first album was amazingly good. His second was even better.

I knew he had some health issues. The early '90s were so stacked in Nashville, Ketchum may have been lost in the Garth-mania, but dang - Mama Knows the Highway? Tremendous song.

Hal Ketchum was originally from Greenwich, N.Y. (it’s near Glens Falls), but first attracted notice in 1981 when he moved to Austin and started playing shows in Texas. His signature hit was “Small Town Saturday Night,” which composers Paul Alger and Hank DeVito wrote about New Braunfels, Texas, the location of the one and only Gruene Hall. Folks down there say he both started and ended his career with shows there, along with building the fence around the beer garden and putting up the post their basketball hoop hangs on (Ketchum was also a carpenter).

Have several of his albums, really enjoyed his music. I saw him in Salem (Ore.) in 1994, a great show. I knew he had some health issues. RIP.
