The guy just always seemed to be "around," whether on Labor Day with the telethon, the Tonight Show, Bloopers and Practical Jokes, or Star Search. Maybe he didn't have a "talent", but it takes something to last as long as he did in an industry that isn't typically associated with longevity.

Having said that, Heaven's got the best Tonight Show now. "This is Ed McMahon and Johnny's guests tonight are Don Rickles, Jack Benny and Dean Martin."

Carson and McMahon had a banter that was and is unmatched on late night TV. I remember one time Ed stepping on one of Johnny's lines, accidentally on purpose, and Carson looking at him and saying, "Star Search going that good for you?"

RIP, Ed.

I used to love how Johnny ragged on him for flogging Alpo or Budweiser or whatever.

The beauty of their relationship is that Johnny wasn't above joining Ed in the live spots when Ed needed him.

Back in the 50s, McMahon was the weather guy on a newscast in Philadelphia that featured John Facenda as anchor man and Jack Whittaker doing sports.
