‘The Thing’ actor Donald Moffat dead at age 87

The name probably doesn't ring a bell. Always thought of him as a poor man's James Cromwell. But you do probably know him from this.

I just watched an old "Hawaii Five-O" episode last night where he was a neurosurgeon, and looked him up on Wikipedia only to find out he died two days ago. Had parts in "The Right Stuff" (Lyndon Johnson) and "61*" (Ford Frick) as well.

Perfectly cast as the Lion of Dunning Sponget (Sherman McCoy’s father) in Bonfire of the Vanities. Probably the only well-cast character in that disaster.

I remember two of his final performances. He played Ford Frick in 61* and the father of C.J. Cregg on The West Wing. The later was just one episode, but it was memorable for his performance as a man losing his mind to Alzheimers's.
