RIP Cloris Leachman

One of those actors who won an Oscar, but then had such a long comedy career afterward that it is almost forgotten they were once serious actors. George Kennedy and Ernest Borgnine fall into that category for me as well.

The Mary Tyler Moore episode where Leachman's husband (never seen) has an affair with Betty White's Sue Anne the Happy Homemaker is a sitcom gem. Among the clues leading Phyllis to suspect the affair, "his shirts are cleaner when he comes home than when he leaves in the morning!"

Phyllis was such a multi-dimensional character - curious how it was developed over the years. The relationship with her kid? The never-seen husband (honestly a great TV trope I'm surprised isn't used more often - aka Carlton your doorman from Rhoda, or Vera from Cheers and Wilson (-ish) from Home Improvement).

My wife loves the original Twilight Zone. Leachman's in an episode with a child who has powerful mental abilities. It's creeeeeeeeepy

Columbo's wife.

BTW, Carlton is one of my favorite TV characters ever.

She played a ***** in one scene in Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid. If you haven’t seen The Last Picture Show, do it immediately.

High Anxiety and Young Frankenstein were just flat out hysterical. her imdb page lists 287 entries as an actress. She played Wonder Woman’s mother in the 70’s TV show.

No one like her before, since and from here on.

Her character on The Last Picture Show was tragic, haunting and sad. No Oscar for best supporting actress or actor was more well-deserved.

I feel like an absolute idiot - I had no idea Chloris Leachman won an Academy Award
