I assumed he died years ago.

Good lead by Christine Brennan:

There was a time, and it wasn’t a short period of time at all, when figure skating was one of the most popular televised sports in the nation, and **** Button was the most famous and most powerful person in the sport.

Button, who died Thursday at age 95, personified figure skating for millions of Americans from the 1960s to the end of the 20th century, and into a portion of the 21st as well.

**** Button dies at 95: Olympic gold medalist was figure skating's superstar and professor

Maybe it's just me... but a day after a plane crash that killed people returning from a major ice skating event, if **** Button dies, you'd better ******* well have some reference to cause of death in that lede.
Worse, it became all about her about halfway through.
That said, RIP **** Button.

EDIT: Barry Wilner of AP did it, even though he's been retired a couple of years.
Button, winner of two Olympic gold medals and five consecutive world championships, died Thursday, said his son, Edward, who did not provide a cause. He was 95.

Second graf. There, was that hard?

Was about to ask if he was on that plane.

Button revolutionized the sport of figure skating as a participant because he literally got the sport off the ground. He added jumps to his free style slating. Before he came along the skaters were basically dancers.

Also, perhaps the best color commentator ever. Generally understated, you felt like you were sitting next to a judge as he broke down the routines and critiqued the jumps/

**** Button filled the role of educating Wide World of Sports and Olympics viewers about figure skating

One other thing Brennan didn't mention in her "story": Button won both his golds on outdoor rinks.
