RIP Bobby Doerr

Wow. I was really surprised that Bobby Doerr was even still alive.

Way before any of our time, obviously, but he was an all-time great. He was my dad's era. I grew up hearing a lot about the Yankees from when my dad was a kid -- the names Snuffy Stirnweiss and Mike Milosevich aren't foreign to me. As well remembered as Bobby Doerr is as a player, I think if you had put him on the Yankees, instead of the Red Sox, people would talk about him with even more reverence than he gets. He was a legit hall of famer.

Doerr was not only the oldest living Hall of Famer, but he was the oldest living former MLB player. That distinction now goes to 99-year-old Chuck Stevens, a first baseman for the St. Louis Browns in the 1940s.

The oldest living Hall of Famers are now Red Schoendienst (94), Tommy Lasorda (90) and Whitey Ford (89).

We lose the oldest living Hall of Famer and perhaps the youngest Hall of Famer-in-waiting in the same few days.

Tommy and Whitey are still traveling every year to Cooperstown. Whitey still looks great and does autograph signings, though dementia is winning the battle.
