Whitlock started at Stax Records, joined Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, was a core musician on George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" record, and was a member of Derek and the Dominos. One helluva backing musician, vocalist, and song writer. Rest.

For some reason, I thought he was in Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen band. But he wasn't, that was Radle and Gordon, and Jimmy Keyes, among other standouts.

Never knew Jim Gordon may have had inspiration from Rita Cooledge for the piano solo on "Layla." What an odd time in pop music, with Eric Clapton and George Harrison breaking from Cream and the Beatles and reforming bands, creating bands and creating music together, all the time lusting over Pattie. I was too young to realize all that was happening.

"Never Ending Song of Love" just barely missed the Top 40 but got a huge amount of airplay on WQAM in Miami that year for Bonnie and Delaney.

Rita Coolidge's book, Delta Lady, comes right out and accuses Gordon of taking it from one of her songs.

Layla is one of my top three or four albums, maybe the greatest guitar album ever made. The Tedeschi Trucks Band's recreation of it at the Lock'n Festival a few years back is an incredible tribute to that album.

He was pretty much the only member of Delaney and Bonnie's band who didn't join that tour. Leon Russell, who ran the tour, was also playing with D&B.

What I have always found remarkable about all of that is how Eric and George basically held a musical conversation about Patti through the lyrics of "ATMP" and "LaOLS." Somehow they remained friends through all of that craziness.
