Fair enough. I still say in today's NFL you do whatever you can to get a franchise QB.

This is only a terrible deal for the Redskins if RG3 eats ass. They have $40 million in cap room to fill in some holes.

40m is not that much considering their needs.

A highly touted draft pick is not the same as a franchise quarterback. Way too much uncertainty here.

That is bat**** crazy dumb on Washington's part.

But that's why they're the Redskins.

and why both Shanahans will be working for different teams 1 year from now.

Their remaining cap space is actually filed with the NFL as "$40M minus the cost of two awful receivers and an overpriced pass-rusher."

Right, but except for Cutler, teams don't trade franchise quarterbacks. And they're never available in free agency unless they're coming off a major injury (Brees, Manning). This is the only other way to get one. The only alternative was to roll the dice on getting one in a future draft. But if you believe RG3 is going to be a superstar, you do what it takes to get him.

Did they overpay? Absolutely. I said as much with my first post. But if he turns into a superstar, it won't matter. And if he doesn't, the front office and coaching staff gets fired. Which was going to happen anyway if they kept putting the likes of Rex Grossman and John Beck under center.

Even if they got Manning, what does that buy you? Two years? Three? Then you're right back to searching for a franchise quarterback.

Our definitions of "franchise quarterback" place us at an impasse, good sir.

I don't have a huge problem with this. Yeah, it's steep, but if Griffin is really the guy you want, you pay what you have to get him. And that was the Rams' price.

And anyway, who was the Redskins' last franchise quarterback? Joe Theismann?

Cutler is one of the 10-12 best in the league. You can win a Super Bowl with him. Even Dilfer has come around.

Use all those other draft picks to draft good players, then add some mediocre quarterback, but win the Super Bowl. Then everyone will assume he's a franchise quarterback. Problem solved.

And now we're back to assuming the Redskins would have done a good job with those picks.

Won two SB titles after Theismann retired.

Yeah, but Doug Williams was a stopgap (who started a total of 14 games for the Redskins) and Mark Rypien was a sixth-round pick who had two great seasons.

Cutler is 19-8 the last two seasons with a receiving corps/offensive line combo just as bad if not worse than the one in D.C.

Anyone care to bet Griffin wins 19 games in any 27-game span in Washington?

One thing's for sure, Mike Shanahan will spend the weekend in off-the-record conversations that guarantee he gets all the credit if Griffin succeeds and Snyder gets all the blame if Griffin fails.

Being one of the 12 best in the league does not make a quarterback a "franchise quarterback." Philip Rivers is a top-12 quarterback.

Being capable of winning a Super Bowl does not making a quarterback a "franchise quarterback." Brad Johnson won a Super Bowl.

Slight threadjack: Roddy White is a colossal moron.

OK, carry on.
