Random bag checks at the gate

Anyone else seen this recently? I saw it twice over the weekend, pulling people aside as they're in line to board. I thought we were done with this useless exercise five years ago.

Recently? No.
Back in 2002-2003 when I was in a long-distance relationship and had a bit of a beard/goatee and would fly out to see my girlfriend for the weekend I would always get hit for the random gate check (perhaps because I had no checked bags, just my carry-ons). However once I shaved the goatee off and just had a mustache, they stopped checking my bags.
