Wonder if this means the CEO and GM search for the Pirates are closer than farther from completion?

I think Matt Morris' first paycheck just hit the Nutter's accounting department. :D

That organization won't be successful until Nutting is out. There are so many changes that need to be made, and I'm sure Jim Tracy isn't far behind Littlefield.

The reader comments are hilarious.

Especially this one...

It gives me hope that Bob Nutting is going to be the owner the Pirates need. -- John Lease, Clifton, Va.

I dig Alan Robinson's frustration and snarkiness here. How many bad Pirates losses has that guy seen?

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- General manager Dave Littlefield was fired Friday by the Pittsburgh Pirates after six-plus seasons in which the team showed little progress on the field or in its farm system.

Director of player development Brian Graham will serve as the interim general manager until Littlefield's replacement is found.

The firing came with three weeks left in the season and the Pirates in their customary spot in last place in the NL Central, with a 61-79 record -- three losses away from a 15th consecutive losing season, one off the major league record.

You don't want Cuban here, it's not worth the sideshow.

But that sideshow could maybe accompany a winner, like it did with the Mavs.

Let the Dan Duquette rumors heat up.

Good job by Bob Nutting giving him a two-year extension on the eve of the 2006 season, the season where that team took a decent leap backward. So I think they're still on the hook for the final year.

Having lived through the Duquette Era in Boston, I can tell you that his baggage and snideness will make everyone pine for Goofy Marky.

I'd take the sideshow if it resulted in a playoff appearance. Not a World Series win. Not an NLCS win. Just make the frickin' playoffs.

I still think that baggage isn't worth it.

I could not possibly disagree with you more. I'll take his sideshow over owners like the Nuttings, who will NEVER do what it takes to win, in a heartbeat. Owners who don't even try to win are the disgrace. Cuban may be a bit annoying, but took look at what he did with the Mavericks. That organization was a disgrace. The team sucked and the franchise was not making money. Cuban turned them into a success on the court and a money-maker.

In. A. Heart. Beat.

The Nuttings probably only fired Littlefield because he wasn't making them enough dough. These people care nothing about product and there's absolutely nuttin' in their history which should make one believe they've finally have seen the light.

Ed Wade will be the new man in P-burgh.

Haven't Pirates fans suffered enough?!

Seriously, this wouldn't shock me. That is how little faith I have in the current ownership.
