Initial impressions....

Holy ****... what a circlejerk for Michael Clayton and Cate Blanchett. Blanchett nominated for playing Queen Elizabeth again seems a little much.

Emile Hirsch gets massively screwed as Into The Wild gets drilled overall.

Anyone ever win two Oscars for two different movies in the same year?

Didn't see Michael Clayton, but Into the Wild deserves more love than it got.

Predictions:
* Actor -- Daniel Day-Lewis
* Supporting Actor -- Hal Holbrook
* Actress -- Julie Christie
* Supporting Actress -- Cate Blanchett
* Picture -- There Will Be Blood

No way does Barden lose Best Supporting Actor...

Ellen Page should also be a lock...

In solidarity with the writers' strike I have decided to pay very little attenton to the Oscars.

At least I have an excuse this year.

Other than the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, and the NFL playoffs, I'd rather watch the Oscars than almost any sporting event...

Carrying on Joe Rossi's work:

1. Best Picture: "Atonement," "Juno," "Michael Clayton," "No Country for Old Men," "There Will Be Blood."

2. Actor: George Clooney, "Michael Clayton"; Daniel Day-Lewis, "There Will Be Blood"; Johnny Depp, "Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street"; Tommy Lee Jones, "In the Valley of Elah"; Viggo Mortensen, "Eastern Promises."

3. Actress: Cate Blanchett, "Elizabeth: The Golden Age"; Julie Christie, "Away From Her"; Marion Cotillard, "La Vie en Rose"; Laura Linney, "The Savages"; Ellen Page, "Juno."

4. Supporting Actor: Casey Affleck, "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford"; Javier Bardem, "No Country for Old Men"; Hal Holbrook, "Into the Wild"; Philip Seymour Hoffman, "Charlie Wilson's War"; Tom Wilkinson, "Michael Clayton."

5. Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett, "I'm Not There"; Ruby Dee, "American Gangster"; Saoirse Ronan, "Atonement"; Amy Ryan, "Gone Baby Gone"; Tilda Swinton, "Michael Clayton."

6. Director: Julian Schnabel, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"; Jason Reitman, "Juno"; Tony Gilroy, "Michael Clayton"; Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, "No Country for Old Men"; Paul Thomas Anderson, "There Will Be Blood."

The Academy made me very happy.

1) Juno-love.
2) Tommy Lee nominated for the correct movie.
3) Cate Blanchett nominated for the Highway 61 Bob in "I'm Not There."
4) Saorise Ronan -- the only good thing about ****ing Atonement -- gets the nod.

I think some of the supporting performances in Juno should have been recognized... Allison Janney was outstanding, as was J.K. Simmons...

I'm glad that as with Little Miss Sunshine and Sideways, the Academy gave one of its Best Picture nods to something like Juno that's not so ponderously serious.

J.K. Simmons...one of the underrated actors of our time.

Agreed. He was tremendous in Juno, as always.

The comic book geek in me couldn't resist a movie with J. Jonah Jameson and Kitty Pryde, despite the presence of the big-screen Elektra.

No love for Lumet or Hoffman for "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead"? A surprise.

The fact that Gordon Pinsent did not get an Actor nomination for Away From Her is a major snub. His work in the movie deserved recognition as did director Sarah Polley. Keira Knightley and James MacAvoy also got snubbed for Atonenment too.

Baffles me why Cate Blanchett got a nod. Happy for Ellen Page and Casey Affleck though.

Based on the overall nominations, I think Away From Her was snubbed big time.

Into The Wild was basically ignored, and that sucks. Emile Hirsch was fantastic and I thought Sean Penn would get some love. Major snub for one of the top three movies of the year, IMO.

Good to see that Once - my favorite film of the year - got nominated for Original Song.

Like with Sideways and Little Miss Sunshine, I'll be openly rooting for Juno, but I'll probably be disappointed again.

Ruby Dee is a surprise. Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth is, too. Also - rewarding Jason Reitman for Juno is a joke when Joe Wright made Atonement. I mean, come on. Comedies might be hard to make. But they're not hard to direct.

No shocker with Michael Clayton. Just a terrific, professional piece of work.

And Paul Thomas Anderson has officially arrived. His ego can't get any bigger, but he's a good guy at heart, and good for him on this.

Supporting Actress is wide open. I think the Dylan movie -- which I loved -- may just be too weird, even though CB was the best thing in it. Ruby Dee's got a lot going for her. I could see a win there.
And Alma, while I take your point vis a vis comedies and drama, to me anyway, Atonement was a formulaic bore, a Merchant-Ivory starter kit. Juno, at least, was sprightly and moved. Atonement just lay there, marinating in its own artiness.

Polley got nominated for Best Screenplay.

I agree with you on Pinsent but I suspect he's virtually unknown in the U.S. so that wouldn't be a sexy choice.

Gordon Who???

"Away from Her" was a terrific flick but in the scheme of things I'm not sure how wide the release was.

Christie will get the nod because she's Julie Christie and she may never do another movie. Besides, her acting was breathtakingly understated. As someone wrote she didnt "play" a person with Alzheimer's.

Anyway, it's the Oscars. Lots to do with Hollywood hype but beyond that, not a helluva lot to do with filmmaking.
