ON THE ROAD

The MMSWs are hitting the road. Can anyone suggest a place to stay in Savannah, Ga. (Mrs. MMSW would like to be in the historic district.) And can anyone suggest diversions or restaurants in that area? We'll be in the area for a week, most of it in Hilton Head.

The very best place to eat in Savannah was out on Wilmington Island, called Williams Family Seafood. Best low-country boil I've ever had. Naturally the place burned to the ground a few months ago. :'(

The Pirate House is a touristy place, but has a terrific Sunday buffet (combo brunch and high-end Southern cooking). Just be sure to make reservations or arrive early (and be prepared to put up with undeserved snobbery from a certain hostess with a likely-fake British accent.)

The Breakfast Club out on Tybee Island is great fun, but I wouldn't make a special trip out there just for that.

Johnny Harris Barbeque is pretty good and close to the Sand Gnats' stadium.

If you are rolling through Dallas, then Campisi's Egyptian Restaurant is the place you need to visit. It is off I-75 and Mockingbird ln. near SMU.... It is the former hangout for Dallas mafia, with secret entrances and rooms... Old man Campisi's granddaughter was in playboy and the pizza is the best in Texas.... It has great atmosphere, but if you are going there on Friday or Saturday night, go early or be prepared to wait....

It is also the place MLB umpire Steve Palermo was shot outside of, chasing down a thug that had just robbed a waitress inside....

My favorite place closed a few years ago, a soul food restaurant in Church Hill called Southern Sugar & Spice. There's a restaurant across the street from the Omni Hotel in Shockoe Slip -- Tobacco Company -- that will give you a second helping of prime rib if you ask for it. I went for it.

Good call on Campisi's, Sportsruss. The pies are different there than anyplace I've ever eaten pizza: oval with flat, thin crust and spicy sauce. There's another place in the 'burbs called I Fratelli that serves the same kind of pizza, but I like Campisi's because it's a fun place to hang out and drink. It's, what, three blocks from SMU?

Dallas doesn't have many institutions like that. An AWESOME Mexican place is Matt's Rancho Martinez, which is down the street from the Lakewood Theater. There's a place in the West End called the YO Ranch that serves excellent chicken-fried. I'm sure boots will rip my recommendations because he thinks they're for tourists, yuk, yuk.

Also by the Lakewood Theatre in Dallas is a bar called The Balcony Club. One of my favorite bars in the world. Has piano music on the weekends, but get there early. Drinks are nice and strong. Good place to take a date.

Isn't Dreamland about an hour from Birmingham?

If you went to Tuscaloosa and skipped it, I think a timeout would be warranted.

But Birmingham? -- Give yourself a pass this one time.

There is a yuppie area in downtown, microbreweries, etc. Not much else.

Also in Dallas, try Louie's on Henderson (Take Henderson at the Knox/Henderson exit off Central Expressway)
Pizza is pretty good, if you like a thin crust.
Atmosphere is better. Good place to hook up with Dallas tv and newspaper folks.
Friendly, neighborhood bar.

Campisi's pizza is more rectangular than oval. And it's cut in strips. As mentioned above, it's different and good.

right, but those aren't as good as the one in tuscaloosa... they've got sides and yuppie **** like that... t-town, there's ribs, white bread and sauce

that said, if you're in t-town, archibald's is better than dreamland (get a half-and-half plate)
