I agree. I just think the heat of everything got under Tomlinson's skin and he finally snapped. He had been holding it in all year and this finally put him over the edge.

It was the first thing I could think of, as it's so recent. But I'm glad I have a personal critic/stalker to evaluate each of my rhetorical tactics on this board.

The challenge of the McCree play was awful just because it was a cry for help from Marty, i.e., we screwed up big-time and I want someone to bail me out. Don't get me wrong, he's not the only one who does it. Even the Man-genius did it last week against NE when the Jets f-ed up that hitch pass/lateral, although it didn't make a difference.

Obviously, McCree screwed up, but Marty and his coaching staff should bear some of the blame. SD was leading Buffalo by 10 in the fourth quarter last month when Clinton Hart picked Losman with 2:38 left and fumbled the ball. Buffalo, which had no timeouts, recovered the ball and later scored.

The Chargers won 24-21, but blew a cover in that game. They lost something much bigger this time. You would think after that game that perhaps they would remind the guys on defense to just fall down with a pick in that situation.

1. Greatest QB ever? Try to remember that the NFL didn't begin in 1983. Johnny Unitas has to be in the discussion, as does Otto Graham, Bobby Layne and, yes, Sammy Baugh. Thanks, Michael Gee, for pointing out Baugh's triple crown in passing, interceptions as a DB and punting (in a similar vein, Bennie Friedman once led the league in passing TDs and rushing TDs in the same season). Don't let the old-timers' passing numbers fool you. The game was very different then.

That said, I still take Montana as best QB ever, in a close one over Johnny U.

2. The '80s Denver defenses were far from terrible. The Broncos led the league in scoring defense and were third in total defense in 1989. In 1984, they were second in scoring defense and intercepted 31 passes. They were third in the AFC in scoring defense in '87. The '85 and '86 defenses were middle of the pack in the league. And Greg Kragen, while undersized for his position, was a terrific player.

OK, the '88 defense sucked. I'll give you that one.

3. Taking a team to the Super Bowl with David Woodley at QB is all the proof I need that Don Shula was the greatest coach in NFL history.

4. I was really rooting for an Indianapolis-San Diego AFC Championship Game because one way or another, someone's misery would have had to end.

If I were John D. Villareal, I'd have 12 more points to make with bold subheads over them, but instead I'll just end this right here.

Here's the other thing regarding Marty... he's been losing these playoff games at home. His last two losses with KC were at Arrowhead. Ditto for the last two losses in SD.

5-13 isn't an accident, and it isn't a statistical anomaly. I knew, somehow, some way, that the Chargers would lose. The man can't win playoff games, and he knows it.

I would think Tomlinson would have more to upset about than someone doing Merriman's "dance." I think it's pretty ridiculous that grown men take their dances so seriously in the first place. Maybe if Merriman had actually done something in the game he would have been able to do the dance instead of being a nonfactor and having to watch his opponents do it.
