In the 80s, the NFC was infinitely better than the AFC. Hell, there wasn't a team in the AFC as good as THREE of the teams in the NFC East, the Giants, Redskins and Buddy Ryan's Eagles. A better measure of the Broncos defense would be the combined score of their three Super Bowl losses: 136-40.

I covered Super Bowl XXII and I remember sitting at a table talking to Bronco defensive tackle Greg Kragen (think that's the name). He was a nice guy and a pretty good interview, but the whole time I remember thinking "Hey, this man is not much larger than I am -- and he's an NFL defensive lineman!!" That's when I became reasonably sure the Redskins would win.
The Broncos defenses of the 80s were very, very weak outfits.

Good point. Compared to the bulk of the league, Broncos have typically been undersized.
