It's much different to learn about this after it's basically all over. Didn't get swept up by rumors or false information that drag thoughts and emotions in different directions. By the time I heard about it, the gunman had already been named, the woman was reported to be out of the country, the number of dead and injured was known. For an event I have no connection to, it's definitely preferable to learn about it this way.

We have a thread discussing the demise of the Las Vegas Sun. When I checked both the Sun and the New York Times were breaking updates faster than the Review-Journal.

People looked at me like I had said something horrific, but this is why I found the D.C. Snipers to be more terrifying than 9/11.

With all the planes grounded, the threatening terror part of 9/11 for most of the nation was over in a few hours. Not diminishing the long lasting pain and consequences of those attacks at all.

But that D.C. Sniper crap went on for a couple of weeks and had me extremely aware and on edge whenever I had anything to do remotely close to the beltway.

Really, both are different things and shouldn't be compared, but the point I had tried to make was short time scale terror versus sustained terror.

I still don't know how Israel or anywhere else deals with this on a sustained basis. And KJIM too.

Tragic for every event.

I'm skeptical that it was an attempt to prevent copycats. Even if MSNBC comes out and says their coverage was designed to try to prevent copycat acts, I'd be skeptical.

I think it's far more likely that MSNBC had a bare bones operation running on a Sunday night around 2am/3am as this story was breaking and that it lasted until people started getting their acts together.

It's pretty ****ing easy to figure out what is fake and not.
For us it is, all of whom either worked in the business or are pretty avid news consumers. But not for others. Remember the poor goober who took a gun to Comet Pizza because of reading about Pizzagate on Facebook.

Exactly. And of course the Trumpistsas are going to accept anything he says as gospel, no matter what. That's the battle we're facing nowadays.

There are people at this hour who have conflated the shooter for some relative of the woman because that is what was first put out there.

Mark Zuckerberg’s sister then credits Reddit with helping solve the bombing in her book that came out like a year later. I was beside myself. Sent a column about it to like five websites. Never heard back. Either I suck or no one wants to cross the Zuckerbergs.

They're not mutually exclusive. :D
