It's happening, anyway. Does anyone honestly believe that everyone was on some honor system, amateur style?

Rugby Union went away from the amateur code sometime around the 1995 RWC. A guy from my club was one of the first to go pro, signing with Japan. In addition to playing rugby, he had some sort of job with with the club owner.

Prior to that, it was an open secret that guys were getting paid, referred to as shamateurism. Boot money, no show jobs, things like that. Even the English had to admit it was better to just put everything on the table.

I'd love to see golf stop romanticizing amateurs, most of whom are basically full time golfers who have their pro career mapped out.

Now that the players will be paid, cash, plus scholarship, room,board,medical and clothing and the coaching staffs for football and basketball will be paid $10-30 million a year, the schools should stop having the students-academics (as opposed to the student athletes), who are getting as in debt as the players are making bank, pay student activities fees, and any sports related fees. Now that we’ve established that Football, men’s and to a certain extent women’s basketball as well as some baseball have very little to do with education and all to do with money, let’s skip the facade that college sports are part of the educational portion of a student’s university experience.
Charge for intramural sports if you have to, but the athletic departments should kickback something to the student-academics.

I don’t disagree with that. He is the epitome of the young guy who got on ESPN at 25 and, 25 years later, doesn't want to lose any of it. (Again, he's also not interesting either.)

Places with good culture (Alabama/Stanford in football come to mind for me) will be fine in NIL.

But a lot of places don’t have culture.

The smart programs will have a true plan in place for the impact, perhaps with in-house specialists in "team building" for the financial discrepancies that will emerge within a team and between athletes on different programs. Also, a department that helps with taxes. All of us who have been freelancers throughout our past newspaper days know that can quickly turn into a mess.

If anything about NIL is going to soak up player's time and efforts, it's building a social media presence. I'm sure that the big players will have people who work on doing this for them, whether it's P5 power schools or actual players who seek professional assistance. There are a lot of ways to spin cash off of the internet. It's a question of who thinks of them first, finds them, who comes up with original ideas.

Some of it is also going to depend on who is photogenic and well spoken enough to make a good spokesman. If you're a great player but you're an idiot in front of a microphone you're going to be limited to something on the order of still pictures and personal appearances, endorsements that are simple.

Had lunch today with the head coach of a D1 non-revenue sport. He's a little concerned some of his smaller program donors ($500-$1,000) will give straight to the kids now, instead of the program, which would really hurt him since his program isn't funded at a high level.

I prefer to wait to see what will happen. Not to be disrespectful, but I'll listen to a D1 head coach's opinion on what could happen before some random guy on the Internet. His sport isn't football. Even losing as little as 10-20K of booster support is significant. For ****'s sake.

I don’t think we’ll see much impact this season but I do think we will by the end of basketball season.

Most of us are in agreement that players should earn income. That’s cool. The Cameo business, for example, is an easy stream for a “name” player.

Money makes everything more of what it already is. Not just people.

This will make college football even more split on inequity but we’re all used to that already.

Athletic departments, often mismanaged financially before the pandemic, will find any excuse to cut non-rev programs and they’ll find a bunch here.

AAU ball/parents will be even worse. The closer you get to finishing “in the money”, everyone gets tighter. It’s like the WSOP.

Can you imagine any workplace in the world where people bemoan sponsorship dollars going directly to the employees, instead of to admin? Who besides Scrooge McDuck could think this is a bad thing?

Lots of kids are going to think they are going to make a lot of money. The smart ones who know how to monetize social media will be early success stories. There are an amazing amount of girls/women between 16-30 who have nice followings on Tik Tok and IG who get paid to promote products. It takes work and creativity.
In the end it will be fool’s gold for most of the players, like it is now. 5 star HS stars fade much more often than they succeed. And coaches will discover they have a lot more power over their p,Ayers than in the past. They have the power to threaten their current income not just future income.
