I heard there were more layoffs this week in Charlotte and/or Miami. No details yet.

Top columnist Linda Robertson dumped in Miami, source says. Sunday sports editor, too.

The wheels are off at the Herald now. Get out while you're still alive ...

Damn.

Wonder how the conversation went? ... "Linda, happy holidays. Now get the **** out. And don't let the door hit you on the ass."

Funny, at the Florida Times-Union yesterday, one of the reasons for laying off 15 copy editors-page designers to create a centralized hub in Augusta, Ga., was how it was something Gannett and McClatchy were also doing to increase profitability. Lemmings following each other off the cliff maybe???

And they recently brought back a desk guy laid off over the summer. And just added two more papers to the publishing center (making it 8), with two more to follow (Bradenton and Miami) early in 2017.

But McClatchy did make this Christmassy announcement yesterday . . . no merit raises in 2017.

My former supervisor in Fort Lauderdale (laid off in 2008) is a sports slot in Miami. Hope he was not the "Sunday sports editor" to whom you are referring.

ASSuming we're thinking of the same former Lauderdale supervisor, an ever-reliable "source with knowledge of the situation" says he survived.

Also, the Sun Sentinel newsroom will move to the printing facility in Deerfield Beach just as soon as the owner of the building that currently houses the newsroom can find a replacement tenant. Will be the second newsroom move in the past five years or so.

That place has all the atmosphere of a bunker. Housed us when we had to work out of there during hurricanes.
Also a damn long drive for most folks, especially those in South Broward/North Dade. Great for those living in Palm Beach County, though.

He's not. ... Needs to stop barking at people, though.

Who owns the florida times-union?

The McClatchy shop that I know moved its page production to Charlotte recently but did the humane thing and allowed the remaining news-side deskers to join the Charlotte operation remotely. No layoffs, no relocations. And the sports staff, which had become a do-it-all operation in recent years, is able to focus on reporting and writing again ... with, of course, a heavy emphasis on online.

What is this "merit" raise of which you speak? What is a raise? My last salary adjustment was in 2008 or there about. Most of my interaction with higher-ups consists of this, "We know it is going to be more work for you, but ..." It's the only truth that has come from their mouths in years. They definitely haven't lied to me in that regard.

"Thank you. We know you place a high value on being a team player."

I'm sure you know I can spell designers, so you're just being a jerk because ...? You reminded me why I quit coming here for so long, jackass.
