Stop the presses! MLB is being proactive about something!

The new guidelines will be in effect starting on Opening Day.

The new disabled list is in addition to the 15-day and 60-day DLs that already exist for players with injuries. Any player needing more than 14 days to recover will automatically be transferred to the 15-day disabled list.

...

Each team will also have to designate a specialist who deals with mild brain injuries to evaluate players and umpires when needed and be required to send its medical reports to Dr. Gary Green, MLB's medical director, for approval before the injured player is cleared to return to the field.

Great, except most of the research I've done on concussions points to seven days as being too short of a time to return to full activities from a concussion.

That said, anything that will encourage a pro sports team to be more careful in its treatment of an athlete with a concussion is a very good thing.

True. But you don't have to activate a guy the first day he's eligible to come off the DL. Plus he can always move to the 15-day or 60-day DL retroactive to when he went on the 7-day to begin with.

This is actually a pretty good idea on MLB's part.

The story said they automatically move to the 15-day if they aren't better after the 7.

No, it said players who aren't better after 14 are automatically moved to the 15.
