I've got to think that firing a coach this late in the hiring season, Marty's successor has already been selected. They'll move quickly, run through the usual five or six "interview" and "interested" reports, but ultimately, it won't make a difference.

Not saying I know who it is, but that's usually how crap like this works. Won't be shocked at all if it's Carroll.

Or, and I think more likely, after the success they decided to suffer thru Marty for one more year until he did _______________ yesterday & got himself fired, which would mean they have no clue what comes next.

The timing of this is idiotic. If it was going to be done, it should've been done before the rest of the NFL raided SD's coaching staff. It's not like Marty and the GM have hated each other only since a bitter drunken dispute at the team Christmas party.

A little short of perfection is losing the Super Bowl, not losing your opening playoff game after going 14-2. Of course, if Marty didn't have the albatross of repeated failures, he would still be around. But there just seems to be a culture of losing when it really counts that surrounds this guy.

No, but a proven lack of postseason success is. He's 5-18 in the postseason. He goes bat**** crazy when they stencil that little NFL Playoff logo on the field. In fact, the Chargers might well have finished 11-5 if road teams were allowed to do that.

His playcalling in this season's loss to NE was just plain stupid. He ran the two best teams he had at KC into the ground, including an indefensible loss to the Jim-Harbaugh led Colts. San Diego WAS NOT going to a Super Bowl with Marty at the helm. No team will go to a Super Bowl with Marty at the helm.

I had heard that a big part of the problem was that the GM wanted Phillips to be the coach. The timing on this is bizarre, I wonder when we find out what actually happened. What a great job to open up after all the big candidates are hired. Someone's going to get really lucky.

As much as we enjoying deriding Martyball, if A.J. Smith can think that he can find 500 other guys that can do a better job, knock himself out.

I heard the aforementioned part on FSR when Siciliano spoke with Jay Glazer. Everyone and their mama knew that when Garrett was hired by Jerry, that Wade would most likely be the new Cowboys coach. Smith knew that, but as I look at it as an outside observer, Smith's hatred for Marty is so deep that instead of convincing Phillips to stay, he let him walk, told Marty that he could not bring anyone in to replace Cameron and Phillips, and clipped him just like that.

But also consider this as well: Marty did turn down an extension, thus making him a lame-duck heading into 2007. Even by taking the extension, Marty was still on borrowed time and would have been ****-canned next season if the Chargers a) didn't make the playoffs and b) win the Super Bowl.

Look, even with Marty's rep for melting down in the playoffs, going 14-2 and getting run out of town by a pissed off GM is bad timing. Who in the **** is A.J. is going to get? I think A.J. is as much of the problem as Marty is. They just ****ed this team internally and Spanos sided with A.J. and let it fester.

As was previously noted, Rivera and Singletary - just up the coast in San Fran - spring to mind. I'd go defensive coach here.

I doubt it, I'd look for a defensive HC here, and a strong OC to continue Rivers development. Mooch isn't coming back as a coordinator. Fassell might though.

it would be silly to hire someone now you'd have to make a real commitment to.... they have to pay marty in 2007, plus the new coach. why make a rush decision and give some new coach a four or five-year deal....

the team is ready made for a super bowl. get a coach with super bowl experience who would be willing to take the job for one year.
