I’ve written this many times here — don’t make fun of Lindsey Graham if he was a closeted/in denial gay man. That’s just bigoted stuff trying to get a quick and cruel chuckle. Instead focus on the fact that he was a soulless political opportunist who will be best known for sucking up to Trump in order to cling to some sort of power in a shifting political landscape.

Trump told MTP this morning that the Kavanaugh hearing might have been Graham’s greatest legacy. Indeed that moment seemed to change Republican rhetoric going forward. At lunch, Kavanaugh seemed cooked and, in another era, would have canceled the afternoon and dropped out due to pressure from the president and GOP leaders. Instead, they came back kicking and screaming, led by Graham, turning it into a circus that included Kavanaugh attacking Klobuchar. It was truly a stunning moment in the history of SCOTUS nomination hearings, all led by Graham, in which the louder and angrier the denial the more believable they were supposed to be.
