But my experience in these situations is that fans and readers don't care how much access we get. If anything, they're more likely to take the side of the team.

absolutely true. however, picking fights with the media can slant the coverage. if mangini's a ****, like belichick was in cleveland, the media will delight in jumping on him. fans follow what they read in the media, hear on talk shows, see on tv. so in that way, mangini's not helping himself. all the more since his team doesn't figure to be very good early on. a writer's take could become that it's early, be patient, he's building things the right way, or a writer's take could become, "this guy doesn't know what the heck he's doing."

belichick was victimized by human nature in cleveland. he was a **** and was treated accordingly. i fear the same for mangini, because the team won't be good enough for the n.y. media to tolerate putting up with an asshole.

the fact the jets' p.r. dept. couldn't convince mangini to lighten up a bit doesn't speak well of them or even gm tannenbaum. coughlin had to do most things the giants' way because the maras  and gm accorsi wouldn't let it be any other way. this isn't a good early sign for "tangini."

Shockey - you obvioulsy know New York media well. Once a player or coach draws that line in the sand of "Us vs them" they had better not make any false steps or they will never be let up for air.

The most recent example is Randy Johnson.

My favorite entry in New York was Rickey "Don't need no press now man" Henderson when he first signed with the Yankees.

This is exactly what Saban did at the start of camp last year to assert that the new regime was as much a polar opposite from the previous as possible.

Really, anything that has the Jets thinking this is NOT the Herman Edwards era should be a good thing.

The Mets need pitching like I need a ****ing boost of endurance). Jets allow phony nice guy Herm Edwards to leave, replace him with Belichick Jr. If you flopped, you may as well poach people from the teams who do it right.

The Jets don't have a quarterback, a running back (Curtis Martin on the Physically Unable to Perform list), one wide receiver (Coles; McCariens is also on the Physically Unable to Perform list) and they're starting two rookies on the offensive line. Defensively, they're switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4. So, there will be growing pains. John Abraham's gone, so Shawn Ellis and Jonathan Vilma are going to face double and triple-teams. The secondary is very young. All kidding aside, punter Ben Grahame might be the Jets' only Pro Bowler.

I don't think the Jets will finish with a worse record than last year, though. Just a hunch. They'll be god-awful in the first half and OK in the second...they'll win four or five games.

Have you been to Giants Stadium for Jets' games? Those fans know something bad will happen to the Jets. It's akin to being a Cubs fan or a Cleveland fan or a Boston Red Sox fan before 2004. It's the self-fulfilling prophecy. If you believe something bad is going to happen, it will.
