Was watching TV and following the threads on the Jake Ratzleff saga
I was thanking the 8 pound Baby Jesus I wasn't in the SLC media.
I was also thinking the 8 pound Baby Jesus I wasn't the BYU SID
Both were once career goals
Then I said "I'm told old for that $hit"
And I WASN'T quoting the movie....It's how I truly felt!

Has this or something similar happened to you, my esteemed colleagues?. And remember, I have a drive line coming from my stomach, but the doctors are happy with things are going....

I wasn't old, and maybe it wasn't my best journalistic judgement, although maybe it was. I was covering small-town preps. I mean, small town. Like this was a high school that wouldn't survive a few more years and there were maybe a few hundred people tied to the town.

I was doing the preseason basketball previews and get to this school that had a fantastic girls basketball team. A clear state favorite. There were two kids in particular that just were an unstoppable duo. They were to be seniors. When I talked to the coach, who remains one of my favorite coaches ever and has since moved up the administrative ladder at much bigger schools, one half of the duo was not part of the conversation.

I asked why and he didn't even hesitate and said, she got pregnant. OK. So I just left her out of it. In such a small place it's not like they didn't know there and why put a teenager through that? Might have been worth a mention, but I definitely haven't thought twice about not including that info or her. Still kind of funny that the coach didn't even think twice about telling me. Maybe it wouldn't have been a big deal considering that, but yeah, I'll admit I didn't want to go there at all.

They made it as far as the state semifinals.

I always sort of wanted to do a story about players getting pregnant and how that affected them and their babies and their teams, but, man, there was just no way to go there, especially 30 years ago. Now we have **** like "Teen Moms" on MTV or Bravo or wherever that crap resides. I'm surprised we don't have a show called "My Daughter is Pregnant and So Am I — By The Same Guy!"

I always sort of wanted to do a story about players getting pregnant and how that affected them and their babies and their teams, but, man, there was just no way to go there, especially 30 years ago. Now we have **** like "Teen Moms" on MTV or Bravo or wherever that crap resides. I'm surprised we don't have a show called "My Daughter is Pregnant and So Am I — By The Same Guy!"

The opposing softball team I was covering in the state semifinals was the two-time defending champ. Their second baseman was a junior and like three months pregnant when they won it last season. When they celebrated going back to the final in late May they took pictures with the baby in the glove-shaped trophy.
