I got a text from a friend today asking if I watched the news last night.

I told him I didn't and asked why. Turns out, a man assaulted and raped two women in his city (which is 25 minutes from mine) and the police sketch looks EXACTLY like my friend.

He wanted to go out downtown tonight, but is scared he would be arrested.

To make things worse, his car was backed into and the person didn't leave any information. He wanted to file a police report, but was afraid to go to the station, because well, yeah.

I'm not really asking for advice or wondering what to do, just sharing a story.

Has anyone else had this happen to themselves or a friend? Maybe not this extreme, but similar?

In the days after Gianni Versace was killed and the manhunt for Andrew Cunanan was underway, one of my friends asked me if I was living a double life. Then he showed me a picture from that day's USA Today.

I was rather perturbed, to say the least. Even my father noticed the likeness.

Weird. A friend of mine also looked like the sketch of Andrew Cunanan.

Is your friend particularly distinctive looking? Or is the sketch just sort of a generic dude?

Yeah, but in fairness, your friend was Andrew Cunanan.

My friend is pretty distinctive looking and the sketch is a ringer for him.

And the description...

Police say the man -- described as white, in his late 20's to early 30's, 5'8"-5'9" tall, with a husky build and a light red or blonde buzz cut

...matches him exactly.

I'd rather not post a photo of him out of respect.

If he's not guilty, I don't see why life doesn't carry on as normal.

No wonder he asked if you watched the news last night.

Seriously, though, I'm sure your friend has a solid alibi and would not be ID'd by the victim, right?

Haha.

Back in 91-92 when I was living in Charleston they had the Low Country Rapist going around who had attacked a handful of women. All police reports had him as 5'9, 150, brown hair, blue eyes, early 20s. That's a pretty average description of many people, including myself. When he was positively spotted in my apartment complex outside a lady's window, I had this feeling of "I'm gettin hauled in for questioning" but thankfully the guy was killed in a car crash fleeing from the cops a not long afterward.
