How to call someone out ... thoughts?

Sports Journalists Forum – Media, Newsroom & Reporting Talk

Help Support Sports Journalists Forum:

Is the dude really deaf? Is it possible he was in the paralympics?

Seriously? This is published in a newspaper in freaking Guyana and you are bent out of shape? Unless you work either there or lost to him in a wrestling match, why do you give a flip?

Kaieteur News columnists include Freddie Kissoon, Stella Ramsaroop, Adam Harris, and an anonymous columnist who goes by Peeping Tom.

Maybe their high standards of journalism will prevent more articles about this guy from appearing in the New York Times of South America.

Wrestling's one of those sports where it's even more shameful to say you are who you aren't.

Why? If some dude wants to lie about getting tea-bagged continually...well, live and let live.

When I was in college, he did an interview and lied all through it. It went in the paper and it enraged the wrestling team, since he wasn't on it.

so you did an article on him being a wrestler and didn't bother to talk to anyone on the wrestling team before you published it?

If the papers want to run one-source stories without checking facts, this is the risk they take.

Somehow I've missed how this guy has brought about the demise of the industry with his sordid tale, but I don't catch everything.

I was looking for some respectable feedback. Being ignorant on the sport is what I expect on other message boards.

really, dog? you're going to come here, ask a question and then start **** if you don't get the answers you want?

play nice, jackie.

Outstanding close to that article. I think it was Benjamin Franklin's quote this references:

(The wrestler's) favorite quote is: “If you believe in the Lord, if you ask, seek or knock, you will get strength from the Lord and earn a gold medal”.

I think you and the deaf guy should settle this...IN THE CAGE!

Seriously though, I'd suggest calling the papers who ran with his story...maybe they'll do a follow-up and get the ball rolling.

If you ever see story on the due, contact the newspaper and point out the errors and let them deal with it.

Unless you follow the guy around with a sign, what else can you do. And you don't need to be "tactful" just provide a link to the USA wrestling roster and a contact at the college if they feel compelled to check up on their incredibly shoddy reporting.

I would call every newspaper in existence and warn them about this guy.

Either that or get over it. But I'm not sure which one will be easier for you.

Fixed for my pleasure.

So what you're saying is, it's ok since it doesn't concern me?

It concerns my alma mater, because it also makes the program look terrible when someone with a 3-17 Greco-Roman record says they were a star wrestler at the school. I was "over it" four years ago until this surfaced and saw he was still up to his antics.

There's nothing you can do about it. Let it go.

But still think about the naked cage match proposal.

No, I didn't write the story I'm talking about in college. I read it, in shock, with the rest of the folks actually on the wrestling team. I was no longer with the paper that semester, I was working at a daily.

No, not exactly answers I'm looking for because they aren't about the subject.

So let me state this again.

As a journalist, do you feel this type of thing should continue when it's been a trend with a particular athlete who wants to continue lying to the media?

That's the ultimate question I'm looking for an answer. Insert the sport of your choice to help comprehension.

I don't think I'm starting **** by any means, but respectfully asking (now) for the potshots on wrestling to not cloud the question posed.

The answer to your question is obvious. It shouldn't happen in the first place, let alone continue. But if you want to do something about it, mention it to the papers running his b.s.

A paper in Guyana didn't get back to you? Call the embassy in D.C.

Other than that. are you a wrestler or a jock strap hanger-on? If it's the latter, deal with it.

Can you provide links the stories in American newspapers?
