Mets minor leaguer dies of apparent heart attack

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets minor league pitcher Rafael Castro has died of an apparent heart attack. He was 18.

Castro died on Friday at the Mets' academy in Carabobo, Venezuela. The Mets announced his death on Saturday.

Castro had spent two years with the Mets' team in the Venezuelan Summer League. The right-handed pitcher was from Colombia.

Could be some genetic defect that was never found. My brother lost his best friend, who was only 20 years old, that way. He just keeled over and they found out later that he had been born with a heart defect.

Neither the Rangers (aside from the Johnny Oates years) nor Mets have exactly covered themselves in glory since firing Valentine. He was far more the solution than the problem in both places.
