So after nearly 10 years of outstanding service to the Webster family, the good TV in our family room seems to be on its last legs. A dark stripe goes about halfway down the middle of the TV much of the time.

I think I have to replace it, but I'm utterly clueless about what features I should be making sure the new TV has. I see things about smart TVs and 4k, but I'm not sure what that means. We have an Xbox One hooked up to the TV and run everything (including Netflix and Amazon) through the Xbox.

I've bought a couple of Vizios for our bedroom and guest room from BJ's Warehouse and they seem fine by me. I'm willing to go more expensive on this one, but I don't know if I need to.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. If it matters, we presently have a 50 inch TV but have room to go up to a 55 inch model.

Smart tv will let you run the apps you're running through the xbox directly through the tv. Not a huge thing since you have the xbox but most higher end sets will have it built in anwyay.

4k is tricky, not a lot of source material right now but if the set will last that could be worth it a few years down the line. Bought ours 4 months ago and didn't go for 4k, mostly price related.

Wait for the next riots, bring a trusted friend, and go loot one. Damn things are bigger and heavier than you'd think.

I'd get a 4K TV and the latest Roku or Fire TV. You can get a 4K TV for a decent price, plus I wouldn't use the built-in TV apps, since they don't get updated as frequently as Roku or Fire TV apps.
