hey guys. my daughter downloaded some spyware named antispycheck last night, and it's playing havoc on the computer. i downloaded a program named spyhunter that supposedly was going to get rid of the infection, but it looks like i dropped $30 for nothing. it kills everything but the original extention that recreates the problem.

does anyone know what i should do?

Download AVG Antivirus and Spybot. Both free. Both very good.

will it get rid of the virus, hank?

and **** off, demo.

Can't say for sure.

AVG does catch a lot of stuff that Norton misses.

Rosie is more the computer expert. But she agrees on the AVG stuff.

That's right, Tom, get the one that sounds coolest.
I'm writing a program called "Virus and Spy Nuclear Death Device" and I'll sell it to you for $500. It won't do a damned thing, though.

Spybot is fine too, although it's more for spyware.

TP:

If you're running XP or Vista, you should be able to restore the system to a point prior to the infection. Go to the help tab under programs and look for System Restore. You can choose a point from say a month ago and that might fix the problem.

AVP is a very good (and free) program. But try the system restore.

spyhunter IDs the infection, it just won't delete all of them because three are running.

if this were a mac, i'd simply turn off the extentions and then start spyhunter ... but this ain't a mac.

spybot has located the problem, i have to wait to see if it will kill it. and, it's kind of funny, spybot also wants to delete spyhunter.

Yes, but you should have a serial number for the new program so you can reinstall it from the website. Also, if you downloaded the install program to the desktop or elsewhere on the computer, you can drag it to a flash drive and move it back to the computer after the system restore.

one more question, if that's OK, why is spybot IDing spyhunter as malware (malicious)?

He probably doesn't even have to go back a month on system restore.

It sounds like he knows when the problem happened (last night), so he might only have to go back a week. That way he wouldn't lose a month's worth of work on the computer.

Anti-spyware programs don't play well with each other. All are designed to get into your registry and remove programs, so they can conflict with one another.

Use the smokescreen, stay on the gun and watch out for that damn helicopter.

Right . . . I missed the timeframe on that. Any time prior to the infection will be OK. Regardless, he won't lose any data (documents or anything else) he's created since then.
