Grossman gets a second chance

They got to the second round of the playoffs with Steve Walsh and Ryan Wetnight one year (average defense with a decent secondary and that's it).

The 1994 Bears are one of the damnedest teams I've seen.

Rex is pathetic, horrible, and dumb. He makes bad decisions, and he has not come along at all. Signing him again is like the Texans cutting Offensive Lineman.

It's not just QB that has been a talentless void for decades. Talking to my brother the other day, I mentioned that the Bears haven't drafted for **** on offense for most of my life. They fail consistently drafting QBs, RBs and WRs. I've never understood how the team can draft so successfully on one side of the ball year after year, but never get it right on the other side. The Bears have a legacy of great running backs, but the only decent one they've drafted since Payton in the mid-70s was Neal Anderson -- and that was 21 years ago. Receivers? It's been all downhill since Harlon Hill in the mid-50s.

Curtis Enis and Wendell Davis kindly ask you to blow it out your ass!

I thought the need for Grossman was eliminated when Orton proved that he could throw the deep ball, too. That's pretty much Grossman's only strength.

Orton has Rex's accuracy problems, but he doesn't have Rex's problem of bailing out of the pocket and into the arms of a defensive end for a 10-yard-loss.

Vince Evans would like to have a word with you.

Seriously, how does one team continually fail in its search for a QB?

Make that two.

What I'd do to have Steve Walsh back under centre.

No complaints from the Motor City, please.

You got the best out of Bobby Layne.

We got the best out of Erik Kramer, too.
Even if we did get the worst out of Rodney Peete, Andre Ware, Dave Krieg, Scott Mitchell, Charlie Batch, Mike McMahon, Joey Harrington, Ty Detmer and pretty much every overpaid offensive lineman in history.
Bears fans, just be glad you've won more than one playoff game during the Super Bowl era.

Krieg threw 14 touchdowns with three interceptions in seven starts that season. He got that bunch of dogs into the playoffs. It was the typical Krieg, red hot in December.

He did more for the Lions in less than half a season than Harrington ever has done.

beef, I saw Walsh on a college football cable show last summer. He looked very content for a guy who once was benched in favor of John Fourcade.

Oh forgive me ... Apparently we Lions fans have been fortunate at the qb position.
And while Dave Krieg may have done the one thing none of the other qbs could do, except Mitchell for one season (that meaning he was able to have a decent year with two pro bowl wide outs, an athletic tight end and arguably the best running back of the generation), I don't believe I ever said Joey was better than Dave.

Well, maybe he can play a better piano.

Mitchell was one of the worst models of a league trend rewarding a backup quarterback with a high-priced contract for success in a handful of starts. Rob Johnson was a Mitchell with speed. But at least Mitchell threw for 4,000 yards one year.

So if it's not Grossman, who is it? Who's better that is available? This is damning with faint praise, but Grossman (after his benching) was the best QB the Bears had. The quarterbacks coming out in the draft are not obvious gamebreakers, and even if they were, they would likely need a few years to develop. And Donovan McNabb? Another Bears QB stopgap at best. Plus, you try to look good with Cedric Benson as your primary back.

The big issue isn't Grossman. It's the Bears' refusal to take seriously the need to develop quarterbacks.
