I know my lefty pals from Canuckistan have no use for Harper, and likely I won;t either, but you have to give him credit for having the guts to crush the Mickey Mouse from jump, a courage that seems to have eluded many of our conservatives.

Apparently everybody but Harper knoew he was going to lose trying to re-open the debate on same sex marriage. Not only was he not going to get the support of the Liberals and the Bloc Quebecois, many of his own party were not going to support it.

Harper's a well documented social conservative--fine--but trying to revisit this debate was just pissing a lot of Canadians off. It's no longer an issue as far as most of us are concerned.

"Final score: Christian activists lost the fight against same-sex marriage. They lost the fight on a motion to reopen the debate. When it was clear they would lose the vote, they fought to get it delayed, and lost. Complete failure, three times running."

John Ibbitson in today's Globe & Mail

The vote yesterday, which fulfilled a Conservative election promise, marked the sixth time since 2003 that the House of Commons has decided in favour of same-sex marriage.

It's really too bad that Harper's opponents will acknowledge only grudgingly, if they acknowledge at all, that he actually kept a promise made during an election campaign.

Meanwhile, Canadian voters who believed Jean Chretien's bull**** in 1993 are still waiting for him to repeal the GST.

Double J, when he promised to revisit this during the election campaign, everybody and his brother was telling him to give it up, that the issue was settled and that the majority of Canadians weren't interested in debating it further.

He wanted to bring it back up to placate the far right wingers in his party and constituency.
