So diagnosed Sunday and now this today. Damn.

How is that possible?

Wow.

My dad never went to see a doctor for stuff. I could see how this is true.

I find this hard to believe. Or maybe I just find it TOO hard to believe -- did he never go to the doctor? Did he never have a checkup, anything? No pain, no symptoms, no cause for concern? Nothing?

I mean, cancer's an awful, terrible beast. That **** don't just sneak up and kill you quietly. It hurts, man.

Doctor says you have cancer, four days later you're dead? HOW does anyone let that happen? How does anyone with a FAMILY allow that to happen?

I don't get it.

What could be a key point: USA Today story says "has died, apparently of pancreatic cancer."

It's morbid, but I'm guessing he wouldn't be the first person to get that kind of devastating diagnosis and decide to handle things himself. Especially if he was in awful shape by the time he went to the doctor.

I don't get it.

Oh... I could imagine myself having cancer now.... I go to the doctor's once every 18 months (I went in 2005 after a 10-year absence).

But the four days after diagnosis death is what stuns me.

If he had been admitted to the emergency room and died at a hospital four days later, that would be one thing..... more believable.

But this is weird.

It's morbid, but I'm guessing he wouldn't be the first person to get that kind of devastating diagnosis and decide to handle things himself. Especially if he was in awful shape by the time he went to the doctor.

My Grandmother had a neighbor who she finally talked into going to see the doctor. The doc saw him and sent him immediately to a major hospital.

He was filled with cancer. Never made it back home.

This was 1982 or so.

Oh, I can imagine it, too. But at some point, your body's going to tell you, "Something ain't right." And it's not going to say that four days before you die -- maybe you only get a few months, but anybody in a reasonable physical condition is going to know something's wrong. And with cancer, people around you are going to know, too. They may not know the extent of it or how serious it is, but people will figure it out. Somebody will be able to tell.

Something's too weird here. I don't think we've heard the half of it yet.

I wonder how his enemies in the ranks of the retired players are feeling right now.

Honestly? Do you really want honesty, because I'm guessing you don't on an RIP thread.

They feel ecstatic they can get a change in that powerful position.

Upshaw probably had to battle less pain in his demise than most ex-players his age.

That's totally unfair. Gene did far, far more for his fellow players than any of his late-to-the-party detractors. He inherited a defeated mess of a union because his contemporaries were apathetic and eventually split and busted. The same former players complaining about retirement and health benefits had the opportunity to take care of themselves when they were active players and in position to do something about it. They made Gene the scapegoat for their pitiful inability to stick up for themselves.

And like Simon said, if Upshaw gets admitted to a hospital and doesn't come home ... that's actually believable. But the information we have now? Something's up. I don't know what, but we're missing some pieces to this puzzle.

And just to clarify, from what the lawyer says, it's actually more like 3 1/2 days from the point he was diagnosed (Sunday night) to this morning.

it says apparently from the cancer as the cause of death, but he also may have had a bad reaction to treatment. had this happen fairly recently to a friend's very close mentor...diagnosed with leukemia one day, dead two weeks later (after a week on life support) due to a bad reaction to radiation/chemo/treatment (don't remember which).

My father had pancreatic cancer, and it was found when he went for a physical.

Pancreatic is fast. And awful. It was a couple of months for my old editor. Back in high school, a buddy's mom went in to the doctor with some stomach pain. They eventually opened her up and cancer was ravaging her, she died a day later.

Dying within days is a weird dichotomy — it's especially mean to loved ones but at least it allows for minimal suffering for the patient and a chance to say goodbye. I'm trying to figure out how to describe it.

There's definitely an unhappy medium to fatal illnesses — between battling a disease for 10-15 years, and dropping dead of a heart attack or dying in a crash. The first is sad but still expected, and the second is so shocking it doesn't register at first. This instance is like "dropping-dead" death to the public because none of us even had a clue he was sick.

Being diagnosed and dying within days is the most horrifying for family. It's so sudden and yet it has time to sink in. That's how my paternal grandfather went 15 years ago with lung cancer. He didn't know he had it because he wasn't a smoker and, well, he didn't see any need to go check out that coughing-blood thing.

At least he didn't have to suffer for months or years, and at least he was able to get his will and other affairs squared away. He shuffled off to the next plane A-OK, but it sure sucked for the rest of us.
