That's why it seems tough for it to move within Maryland. But Delaware is close enough a lot of the people who have been going for years still could of they want. It also seems like Philly turns out for big events and they'd draw from that pool.

But, Hell, why not move it to California?

There is a zero percent chance it runs in Delaware. The Stronach Group owns both Laurel and Pimlco. That's why it could go to Laurel.

It's only going to a Stronach Group track, and there is no chance it leaves Maryland. Zero. Zilch.

They own Gulfstream and Santa Anita, but it isn't gonna move outside of Maryland.

Makes sense. I know nothing of the ownership situation. And they keep getting record crowds, so maybe they are in no rush to make changes.

It's a better facility, which The Stronach Group has already put in millions to renovate. Horsemen also like it significantly more there than Pimlico, which is understandable, because Pimlico is a dump and is in a worse neighborhood.

Look for Laurel to try to get a Breeders' Cup soon. If they pull that off and put on a good show, then maybe a pitch can be made for the Preakness.

Politically, good luck to them. Baltimore ain't letting that race go without a fight.

If Stronach just tells Baltimore they are closing the track what can Baltimore do? The only thing the state could do is withhold racing dates from Laurel but I don't they would do that.

I think there have been horses that won the Derby and Preakness, and then skipped the Belmont, back in ancient times.

NYRA ought to be bending over backward to get people to the track on Saturday, but, of course, it has all the creativity of a brick. Make it a $2 day — two bucks to park, two bucks to get in, two bucks for a program. Hell, give everyone a free $2 wager on the first or last race of the day.

Didn't they used to be run in a different order way back when? I seem to remember hearing or reading that once.

Not sure. Looking back through Wikipedia (yeah, I know), twice in the 1930s, a horse won the first two legs and didn't race in the Belmont. I guess the 1930s qualifies as ancient times, although I was thinking it was in the 19th century.
