Who beat?
2:03.34.
Play by play is hard. But horse racing has to be up there
as one of the hardest. Great call by Larry Collmus as always.
A whole lot. Secretariat’s time of 1:59 2/5 is almost four full seconds faster. I read somewhere that a second equals about five lengths, so you do the math. How many lengths is that behind Big Red?
I know nothing about the horses, but the names are great.
Take Mystik Dan to take it all. Just a hunch.![]()

In the words of Chick Hearn, "No harm, no foul. No blood, no ambulance."Was it me or did place and show beat the **** out of each other to finish in place and show?
They run cleaner and one of them wins, right?
Or 160 feet or about half a football field from the back of each end zone.I've read for 50 years that a second equals six lengths, so ... 20 lengths.
Agreed. Was it me or did place and show beat the **** out of each other to finish in place and show?

Watch the tape again. It was a horrible call after the final turn.
He completely missed the move by Mystik Dan to take the lead.
He seemed to not even know Mystik Dan had the lead until a furlong later.
I can't remember a blown call as bad as this in the stretch run of any Derby before.
I mean, sheesh! A whole furlong later!!!![]()

EDIT to add the video. Watch and listen from 1:35 mark to 1:58 ...
Not what you asked for, but I find this virtual race so interesting. All the triple crown winners, if they had run the Derby together. How many lengths is that behind Big Red?

Never understood the hesitation for horses to run all three TC races. Hell, these creatures were bred to do this, trained to do this - and it gets to that point and you hold back? Are they that fragile? Is the risk of them breaking down that high? If so, the sport has some serious questions to ask itself.
