I recorded race and it was still very exciting not knowing what was going to happen. What a photo finish, amazing. Tough luck for Sierra Leone having to go way wide. He seemed to have the most at then end but just too far to go.

Play by play is hard. But horse racing has to be up there
as one of the hardest. Great call by Larry Collmus as always.

Watch the tape again. It was a horrible call after the final turn.
He completely missed the move by Mystik Dan to take the lead.

He seemed to not even know Mystik Dan had the lead until a furlong later.
I can't remember a blown call as bad as this in the stretch run of any Derby before.

I mean, sheesh! A whole furlong later!!!

EDIT to add the video. Watch and listen from 1:35 mark to 1:58 ...

How many lengths is that behind Big Red?
A whole lot. Secretariat’s time of 1:59 2/5 is almost four full seconds faster. I read somewhere that a second equals about five lengths, so you do the math.

Was it me or did place and show beat the **** out of each other to finish in place and show?

They run cleaner and one of them wins, right?

I know nothing about the horses, but the names are great.

Take Mystik Dan to take it all. Just a hunch. o_O

My name is Dan, the horse's name was Mystik Dan. "a hunch." Haha. Knee slapper. Shoulda thrown some down though...

I've read for 50 years that a second equals six lengths, so ... 20 lengths.

In the words of Chick Hearn, "No harm, no foul. No blood, no ambulance."

I was kind of surprised nobody lodged a protest after that. The outside horse was lugging hard and initiated the contact. I think it might have been after they hit the wire, but the jockey for the inside horse actually reached over and shoved the outside horse with his right hand to create space.

Can't argue with you there. Not a great call.

Seems like Mystik Dan, Sierra Leone and many other Derby horses are skipping the Preakness and going straight to Saratoga to prep for the Belmont.

Not only did he not know Mystik Dan was in front, he dramatically announced Resilience had taken the lead when Mystik Dan was already a couple lengths ahead of him.

Never understood the hesitation for horses to run all three TC races. Hell, these creatures were bred to do this, trained to do this - and it gets to that point and you hold back? Are they that fragile? Is the risk of them breaking down that high? If so, the sport has some serious questions to ask itself.

Bred for speed, not durability.
