Yeah, the optics aren't great. But our society has been paying teen-agers and children for years. Child actors and singers (Jerry Mathers, Ronny Howard, Macauley Caulkin, Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift, the Osmonds, the Cowsills), teen tennis players, gymnasts, swimmers, etc. Is there a difference in paying the best high school wide receiver in Florida?

There are a lot of abuses by the adults and the kids who couldn't handle the money. Michael and the Cowsills had abusive fathers. Caulkin turned into a train wreck. So did Jennifer Capriati. But you can't not pay people because of what you think might happen.

How much extra money would I have to earn before I started using some of it to get a kid to play sports at a particular high school?

If I were a billionaire, what would I do first: Give a dollar to a politician, or give a dollar to seduce a high school athlete?

These are the questions that keep me up at night ....

A toast to all the prep writers in Florida, who no longer have to contend with those "private schools are paying kids" emails, alls and letters.
To say nothing of public school coaches bitching in person.

“Why yes, I’m sure if I drove over 200 miles to Jacksonville and confronted the coach at The Bolles School they’d confess to everything. I’ll hop right on that.”

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change.
I was wrong about how I thought NIL would go the first time around. But my guess is this will be used for college boosters trying to make down payments on top talent. I eagerly wait this blowing up in someone’s face.

The Florida version of NIL does not allow for collectives. For me, it's what I thought NIL should be all along ... a kid can make a few hundred or even a thou on going to card shows, car dealership openings or the local sporting goods store.

Also, minors need parents to sign off on any contracts in Florida but Disney has been dealing with that for years. There are enough lawyers in Florida who know the drill.

But will they all remember or even learn what a 1099 is?

Florida seems really good at opening big cans of worms, not just for itself, but now, for everywhere else.
Examples of Florida residents who have earned money as minors in sports or entertainment:
Caleb Dressel
Jennifer Capriati
Justin Timberlake
Christine Aguilara
Brittany Spears
Erriyon Knighton
Ariana Grande

We could go on. And there's no difference between those examples and a high school football player in Orlando or Jacksonville earning a little jack.

First job I had in the business was in a city adjacent to a now-closed Air Force base. The wierd comments I'd hear from parents and boosters of opposing teams "Hey, they got kids from North Carolina on here. And Germany ... but just dependents, right?"

I see a difference between high school-aged people working on their games/talents on professional tours and in professional businesses, where everyone is routinely and rightly paid, and those actually attending high school, where no one, typically, is or should be paid. No one is coercing Ffrench into playing high school football. He is doing so, presumably, because he enjoys playing, and because, in doing so, he is, basically, auditioning for the college/pro levels, which he will reach in due time. Or earlier, if he finds a vehicle through which to do it. Which, I guess he has.

Granted, it’s DeSantistan. But considering there’s a possibility that college athletes are going to be considered employees, could high school athletes also be considered employees if they’re getting paid? And if so, could that create issues with child labor laws?

Again, we’re talking Florida here. But it’s something that could come up as an issue.

That's why in Florida kids under 18 will need to have their parents sign off on any NIL contracts.
