Favorite song from a band you know sucks

I have no idea how big or well-known it is outside of SoCal, but "Million Miles Away" is on the very short list of the greatest songs of the era.

The Plimsouls may be tops on my list of bands that broke up two soon. Just two records and "A Million Miles Away" was on the second. That whole album is brilliant. Then Peter Case decided to have a solo folk career and spend decades playing coffee houses.

Last weekend I was reminiscing about how one of my favorite I'm-so-glad-I-moved-to-LA memories of the mid 90s was KROQ's Memorial Day Flashback Weekend, when Richard Blade and Jed the Fish would play deep cut New Wave songs that I had on vinyl or had read about in Trouser Press but had never heard on the radio growing up in Nashville. Driving down Sunset to the beach with the moonroof open, the windows down, and We Don't Need This Fascist Groove Thing cranked is a memory of a lifetime.

2, Everyone should drive (and walk) Sunset from start to finish which is about 25 miles.

3, Silver Lake is one of my favorite sections of Sunset.

4, Found a great vegan spot for lunch on Sunset in Silver Lake. Never had vegan but this was excellent. Was also the day I learned that it's not pronounced kwi-NOAH but KEEN-wah.

5, If you're going to do it, do it right ... Sunset Boulevard, windows down, volume up ...

Something I used to do, which I really enjoyed, was trying to drive the length of a major street. I had to go to downtown L.A. for something and I found myself at 1 Wilshire (a very prominent building). So I drove it all the way until it ends at Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica. I did the same thing on Sunset, starting in L.A. near Dodger Stadium and taking it to Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Also, Mulholland Drive and Malibu Canyon Road, from the Valley until they end. Sepulveda is impossible. I think I read somewhere that it is the longest continuous street in the country (freeways not included, but I might be wrong). I have driven it from West L.A. to South Long Beach, although it gets a little dicey in South Torrance where it merged with PCH for a while then branches off again. About 35 years ago, my wife and I drove Highway 1 all the way from Santa Monica until it crosses the Golden Gate Bridge. Fun trip of about 4 days. We hung a right after crossing the bridge and ended up in Napa.

In '92, I drove the long way back from LA to Pismo Beach ... 1 to the 101 ... day faded to night somewhere near Oxnard ... I'm hugging the coast ... window down, breeze on my face, can't remember the music but it would have been KROQ'ish ... and somewhere between Ventura and La Conchita the full moon began bouncing off the ocean ... the water shimmered and rippled in every direction ... a moment of moments.

I remember reading when I was a kid that Figueroa Street was the longest in the country. Toronto has Yonge Street, which I think stretches to Manitoba.

Huge Jam fan here and while I think That's Entertainment is Weller's finest three minutes and change (especially the live version off Dig The New Breed) to these ears this is easily among their top five songs.

"West End Girls" takes me back to the summer between my junior and senior year of high school, driving around with the windows rolled down and that song on the radio. It hangs in my memory, slightly yellowed by time's inventory, of one of the best times of my teen years that wasn't as great as my memory would say. Today, that song takes me back to believing it was a great time, and it brightens my mood and I crank the **** out of it on my radio.

I associate music with different eras of my life. What I was listening to with this girlfriend compared to what I listened to a couple years later with a new one. Longtime occasional lover, new songs. Longertime ex, new songs and artists. When I hear a defining song or even artist, it takes me back to those times, those women, those lovers.

The power of music is like no other art.
