Making a wedding playlist for my bestie got me wondering.

What do you think the most epic songs are of all time? There are songs that will go down as the best ever, songs that when you heard them you knew they were gold. Other songs will be crazy good just for you.

I'm going on a slightly long drive to go hiking this weekend, I thought this would help with a new playlist.

Here's a couple I thought of, pretty standard:

Stairway
Hey Jude
Baba O'Reilly
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Nuthin' But a G-Thang
How Soon is Now
One - Metallica
Empire State of Mind
Rolling in the Deep

A couple of personal faves:
When Will They Shoot - Ice Cube
Jesus Walks - Kanye West
Little Lion Man - Mumford
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode

So weird that you started this thread ... I was listening to November Rain on the radio on the way to work a few hours ago and thought about starting the exact same thread because that song is just that -- epic.

Jesus. Just when I think I have eclectic taste in music, FJ blows me out of the water.

Two things.

1. I grew up in a rural area with no cable. Radio was a big part of my life, which brings me to No. 2:

2. I worked in a used CD store for years. I love music. It drive Dr. J nuts that I have to have my iPod with me for my three-minute drive to work.

And pern, November Rain is pretty epic, espcially the video. Nothing says early 90s cheese than Slash in front of that church.

Phallic guitar in front of a church? It's like it was on an early 90s cheese checklist.

I remember hearing something about the preacher in the video thinking it was a real wedding, and Axl Rose and Stephanie Seymour actually got married. Surely, that was an urban legend?
Oh, and even laying in a coffin, Stephanie Seymour was HAWT.

Epic songs?
Gotta have Freebird ready.

Any list without "Like a Rolling Stone" is suspect.

And while it was played, and has been played, to death, "American Pie" is a classic piece of music.

I'd also put "Satisfaction" on that list as well.

Favorite epic songs that will get the volume cranked up big time, in no particular order:

Won't Get Fooled Again/The Who
Dazed and Confused/LZ
Like A Rolling Stone/Dylan
Sympathy For the Devil/Stones
You Don't Love Me/Allman Bros.
Truckin'/Dead
Spanish Moon/Little Feat (the version on Waiting For Columbus)
It's The End of the World.../REM
Born To Run/Brooce
For What It's Worth/Buffalo Springfield
Back In the USSR>Dear Prudence/Beatles
Darkness, Darkness/Youngbloods
Time Has Come Today/Chambers Brothers (the long version, especially)
Green Onions/Booker T & MGs
You Really Got Me/Kinks
Hot For Teacher/Van Halen
One of the Boys/Mott the Hoople
South Side of the Sky/Yes
Rockin' In the Free World/Neil Young
Beck's Bolero/Jeff Beck
Highway Star/Deep Purple
Even Flow/Pearl Jam
Light My Fire/Doors
All Along the Watchtower/Hendrix
It's My Life/Animals
Waitin' For the Bus>Jesus Just Left Chicago/ZZ Top
Willie the Wimp/Stevie Ray Vaughan

Plenty of others, but that's pretty good for now.

"Gin and Juice"

"Song 2" (Not epic in length, of course)

Albert77, that is a mean list.....Back in the USSR>Dear Prudence is special to me as I played that side of the White Album every morning for 5 years while getting ready for work, and I played it loud. "It's My Life", as is most of the Animals catalogue, is vastly underrated.

I nominate "Reelin' in the Years" as an epic tune that if released today would win a Grammy as best song. It's only 40 years old.

You want really epic in scope, it seems, so here are a few that haven't been mentioned:

"Jungleland" by Bruce Springsteen
"November Rain" by Guns 'N' Roses
"Welcome to the Terrordome" by Public Enemy
"When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin
"Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones
"Murder was the Case" by Snoop Doggy Dogg
"Purple Rain" by Prince
"B.o.B. (Bombs over Baghdad)" by OutKast
"Badlands" by Bruce Springsteen
"What You Know" by T.I.
"Rock 'N' Roll Suicide" by David Bowie
"Death or Glory" by The Clash
"Ordinary Pain" by Stevie Wonder

I'd probably avoid playing any of those at a wedding, though. You might be able to get away with "Purple Rain," "B.o.B." or "What You Know."

She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult
Nobody's Fault But Mine - Zep
Black Gold - Soul Asylum
Birth, School, Work, Death - The Godfathers
The Core - Clapton
Post Toastee - Tommy Bolin
Santa Monica - Everclear
A Quick One - The Who

"Layla" - Derek and the Dominos

"Sweet Jane" - Lou Reed (Rock and Roll Animal version)

"Red House" - Jimi (Live In The West version)

Pretty much anything on the Allmans Fillmore East album

This thread will go on forever, but for me, an "epic" song is at least five minutes long.

Two for the list that meet this criteria...

Papa Was a Rolling Stone - Temptations
Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day

It's funny seeing "Rolling In The Deep " making an epic list in the short time it's been out, but it certainly could be there for the long run. It gets regular play from me.

I think with the airplay it got, plus the grammy performance, made it a late entry for me. Same with Empire State of Mind. Even though it was released so late, it could have easily made the top 5 list for song of the decade.

I suppose I Will Always Love You should make the cut too. I always hated that song, but it was everywhere.

Add Thriller too.
