The idea of anyone under age 35 sitting and watching a regular-season baseball game is hilarious on its face. The idea that anyone outside New York is going to tune in for three hours of May baseball because a player who hasn't put on a uniform in three years is even better.

Baseball is really bad TV, and getting worse as the strikeouts pile up. It is, however, a great night out. And it also lends itself to lots of great gambling/fantasy aspects. And, importantly for millennial, shareable GIFs.

There are 350 million people that live in this country. I'm obviously exaggerating for effect. My 7-year-old has even watched a game with me from time to time. But I would hypothesize that the ratings in the younger demographic are not very high. That's not even to say they don't like baseball. But dedicating a three-hour block to watching 300 pitches thrown and about 40 put into play is a lot to ask of still-virile people.

Agreed. Numbers are down, but I'm in the demo you reference and I watch 90 percent of my favorite team's games all the way through. I don't think my generation is incapable of being entertained by baseball, but maybe that's anecdotal because I just know a lot of sports fans who happen to like baseball most.

Personally, I think that it is going to get tougher and tougher to get young people interested in watching spectator sports, period, especially on TV. They are doers, not watchers. In 1962, when the average man busted his ass on his feet in a 120-degree factory all day long, maybe he comes home and wants nothing more than to sit back and vegetate in front of a ballgame for a few hours. In 2017, after a day spent writing TPS reports, chained to a desk, you want to come home and do something. Not to mention that, for fathers of young children, the days of downing two glasses of scotch and relying on wifey to cook dinner and tuck the kids into bed are receding ever further into the past.
