I come to you guys for help on something I know nothing about. Ours broke and we have to replace it. Lots of good deals out right now, but just wanted to see if you have any good recommendations.

Willing to pay for good value, but budget is always an issue.

Thank you in advance,

EF

Get one with a good drying mechanism. We bought a new one a year or so ago and somehow didn't get one that had a good dryer. Washes just fine, but it's a pain in the ass having to dry most of them when you take them out.

I'd have to look at it.
Make and model might be fine, we just always wash our dishes by hand.

What did you buy, so I know not to get it?

We got this one: http://www.lowes.com/pd_353946-39047-SHE3AR75UC_4294857925__?productId=3409006&Ns=p_product_avg_rating|1

And like I said, it's great with the washing and the lack of noise it makes. Just didn't have a great drying mechanism.

I swear by my Kenmore Elite. Had it about 5 years, no problems, dries everything fast and most importantly it's practically silent.

This last part is crucial...pay a few dollars more to get as quiet a machine as you can.

How do you "break" your dishwasher?

Mine works whenever I need dishes washed

I sold my house, but my old place had an old-ass dishwasher that was so loud it could literally drown out the TV in the living room. So, yeah, do a little research on noise levels. The place I rent now, the dishwasher is quiet but it doesn't clean for ****. Half the time I end up pulling still-dirty dishes out of there and washing them by hand.

Whatever you do, don't use bottled dish detergent in you dishwasher. You will be cleaning up foam for hours. Yes, I learned the hard way. :)

Elliotte, our very generous landlord did a complete reno on our kitchen a few years ago.

All brand new stainlesssteel appliances (best is the Bosh gas stove) including a GE diswasher. It's extremely quiet, very energy efficient and dries everything to a T.

Since we didn't pay for anything, no idea of cost but I suspect they're mid range. Probably check them out at Home Depot.

Did that when I was 18.

Wish I could say I was that young. My sisters got a good laugh out of it, though.

We bought an ASKO recently based on reputation but most importantly adjustability of the racks. We use flat pasta/soup bowls frequently so took one and tried it in every dishwasher in the store (Coast Appliances in Calgary). ASKO was the only dishwasher that held them in proper orientation for washing. Only knock is having to push a power "on" button. Washes and dries well, is quiet and has its own hot water heater.

Consumer Reports ranks a Bosch highest. My mother has had one for 12 years and it's great; I can't wait until mine dies (it's very, very loud) so I can replace it with a Bosch.

I'll third Bosch. Expensive as hell, though, and might not be worth the $$.

I live an old building and for some reason our board of directors randomly decided years ago that the plumbing couldn't handle dishwashers so they weren't allowed. ... Until we actually hired an engineer because enough people thought it was nonsensical. ... and the engineer said dishwashers were fine.

I think I was the first person to get one, because that coincided with me tearing my place to the studs and just redoing it. It seemed really cool at first, but the truth be told, we barely use the thing. We just wash our dishes by hand 97 percent of the time.

I do not see how any family with children wouldn't make a dishwasher a top priority. They ain't gonna wash 'em, and their glassware use is astonishing.

I second the comment on a drying mechanism. It's really only a problem for us on plastic cups where the bottom edges are raised. But it means having to dry every one of them again.
