"Disliking his guests" is overstated greatly. When you have more than 19,000 guests, it stands to reason there will be some you dislike. But it wasn't as if he had contempt for a large number of them. Remember, 12:30 a.m. on NBC wasn't exactly a must-visit on the promotional tour, so anyone who felt disliked could have skipped "Late Night" pretty easily.

Sometimes non-fawning gets mistaken for dislike.

While he may have been fond of certain people, Letterman was the only TV host in my memory who actively disliked his guests.

That changed after 9/11 and his heart surgery and his sex scandal and the birth of his kid and his marriage as he mellowed a bit but the Letterman I remember, the one I watched in the 80s and 90s, it was unlike anything on TV and it was glorious.

I agree with what Smasher said in response to this, and I'd add that he was still ornery and sniped at people after his heart surgery and 9/11. While I don't think he was as openly sardonic, his stuff with Paris Hilton, Bieber and Selena Gomez showed him still willing to stick and jab.

I had a feeling when he went on McDonald's show a while back that he was getting anxious about getting back into it.

An active mind needs to stay active. That was his life. He stayed at CBS a decade too long but this could be his unfiltered wheelhouse.

To be fair to Carson, one of his writers / producers was on a podcast and noted that he wasn't a hermit or Howard Hughes in his final years. He just wasn't involved in entertainment, except for an appearance on The Simpsons and writing some jokes for Letterman. He was busy golfing and playing tennis (and probably banging half of Hollywood).

The guy who runs that was on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast talking about Carson. It made me want to check out The Carson Podcast, definitely, but I've already got a queue of like 50+ episodes from other pods that I haven't listened to, haha.

At first the Netflix format looks too infrequent to be directly topical but I'd guess he'd do a trial run of a very limited number of shows and maybe step it up if he got comfortable doing it.

Yes, I loved the Gottfried podcast about Carson (I took it in back in May -- that host - NOT Gottfried - has one of the smoothest voices).

If you check out The Carson Podcast, go with the Martin Mull, Carol Leifer, Paul Povenza podcasts. Hal Gurnee was my favorite. Others of note that I enjoyed: Fritz Coleman, John Davidson, **** Cavett and Charles Grodin, Pat Sajak, Jennifer Tilly, David Steinberg, Bob Saget.

The host isn't as smooth as the guy on Gottfried but the stories are really solid.
