Interesting story from an editor of The Drive, an automotive news web site, who got stopped while test driving a Range Rover on loan from the company.
The tl;dr version is that a data entry error by the Los Angeles Police Department over a missing plate during a Land Rover photo shoot triggered a nationwide alert through the Flock camera AI system; which was exacerbated by the unique way New Jersey's manufacturer plates are designed; and which in turn led to police in Minnesota spring on this guy in a Kohl's parking lot after tracking him around town for several days with the Flock cameras.

Thankfully, this guy kept his wits about him and he and the police somehow sorted it out during the stop. He mentions, though — and so did the police who stopped him — that that could easily have not been the case with a different set of officers and someone who wasn't as on the ball as he was.

Today I learned that Flock cameras not only just shoot the license plate as it was sold to city councils throughout the land, but that it also shoots the drivers' compartment and can ID drivers by their hairdos.

A Brown University economics professor gave his students a take-home midterm in the wake of the shooting there. They did amazingly well -- the average grade was 96 in a class of 86 students. Then he told them the final would be taken in person. Eighteen students dropped the class. Nine others didn't show up. Among the 59 who took the final, the average score was 48.

The obvious implication is that the students used AI to do the take-home test, which has resulted in an uproar in the academic community.

I heard a segment on the OpenAI prototype breaking out of a secure sand box, finding a way onto the Internet and hacking a different AI. The AI expert said we (as in humanity) got lucky that the OpenAI didn't decide to cover its tracks and that it didn't decide to replicate itself outside of the company servers. He pointed out the number of people who've worked on AI who have left the business and, as he said, "gone off into the woods to write poetry and spend time with their families" because "Silicon Valley is scared to death of AI."

It took me less time to read the entirety of “The Big Short” than it did for me to read this, but it’s worth the time involved to ponder the fact that most decisions about the top of our economy are based on somebody thinking, “well, maybe the fundamentals are wrong but if they’re not, we’ll get ours before it crashes”

Any other piece of software makes an error it's due to a coding ****-up. AI.aoftwarre makes an error and we're supposed to ascribe agency to it. The whole "We're so scared to death of this thing we had no choice but to create" narrative from Silicon Valley is tired. It's going to take over everyone and everything except my company which created it.

I listen to at least 7 AI industry podcasts every week and every one worships the ground Elon Musk walks on. I just don’t understand it. Yes, his companies have had tremendous success (StarLink, Model S, Falcon 9) but Grok is a failure, Bloomberg called CyberTruck a bigger bust than the Edsel, Tesla is on life support, even he admits Doge was a mistake and yet they keep going on and on about how he’s taking us to Mars by the end of the decade, how he’s putting AI data centers in low Earth orbit next year, and he’s implanting chips in human brains any day now.
And of course, not once does anyone ever mention the blatant and frequent racism, misogyny and homophobia.
I just don’t get it.
