A majority of the DMN and Al Dia staff announced today that they are forming the Dallas News Guild. This will certainly bear watching.

I mean... cool. DMN organized. They join many newsrooms across the country fighting back against management. This is only an announcement. The better news will be if they actually pass a vote and the organization recognizes the union as a legitimate entity.

I'm not sure how much teeth a union has if they organize now. How do you force a company into concessions when your workforce is small , fragmented and there are hundreds of other journalist s desperate for jobs?

Jacksonville, Palm Beach and Orlando have formed guilds and the vote in each case was in excess of 75 percent in favor. That's pretty significant in a right to work state like Florida.
There are ways you can bug management. Just the fact that you organized pisses them off. You can also slow-play layoffs by demanding to see their financials and force them to try to come up with other areas they can cut costs. At least it's a middle finger in their direction and the knowledge that there are guild lawyers at the national level willing to make a phone call to the NLRB.

And remember the paper in Missouri that voted to unionize, and shortly after they did, they laid a couple of people off, then had to undo that and keep them because it was a violation of labor law.

Those 2 people probably think forming a union - without even having an agreement with the company - can pay dividends.
