Surprised there isn't anything on here about this. Two workers were killed in a crane collapse at the site of the stadium set to host the opening game of the 2014 World Cup.

I don't think it was merely a crane collapse. The AP story I read said part of the stadium collapsed.

This should surprise no one. Brazil has been severely behind schedule in getting stadiums ready for the WC almost from the moment it was awarded the event and is racing -- likely at the expense of building and safety standards -- to get the buildings on line in time. And it isn't the first such problem to come up in Brazil's construction frenzy.

From the AP story:

One worker died during construction of a stadium in the capital Brasilia last year and another in the Manaus venue in March. Also in March, heavy rains flooded the construction site of the Maracana Stadium, forcing the cancellation of a FIFA inspection visit at the time. In May, a small part of the roof at the Salvador stadium fell in after it wasn't able to sustain the large amount of water that settled on top of it.

I have a very bad feeling World Cup 2014 is going to end up like Mexico City in 1968, with the Brazilian Army in the streets shooting down rioters in order to save the spectacle. Brazilians have had it to the gills with their government and the Cup represents everything they believe is wrong with their country. And one has to wonder how the 2016 Olympics will fare if there is serious violence during the World Cup.
