MADRID (AP) — A spokesman for three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador says the cyclist tested positive for a banned steroid during this year’s race.
Contador’s publicist released a statement Wednesday saying the substance, identified as clenbuterol, was found in a test taken on July 21. Contador has blamed food contamination as the only possible explanation for the positive test.
Contador will hold a news conference on Thursday in Pinto, Spain.
The statement Contador was first made aware of the result on Aug. 24.

There's your Holy ****! moment from this year's Tour de France.

I can't find anywhere that says how long the suspension is. Is it just indefinite until they hear his appeal?

Cycling has turned parody into reality.

Contador's "victory" by 38 seconds was already dirty -- that is, if you're an Andy Schleck fan like I am.

Upon further review, it does seem plausible that he was either set up or inadvertently ingested it...

Why take such an obvious drug?

Didn't he win by pretty much the exact time he picked up when Schleck fell?

Tyler Hamilton's vanishing twin thinks this is ridiculous.

If the frogs don't strip him of the title, it's complete horse****. Although we know Floyd was on the juice, they jumped all over him from the start even before a B sample was tested. Contador has had both A and B tested with the same results. According to some reports, there is no provision for an allowable amount. It's either there or not.

I far more pissed that he attacked Schleck when he had the mechanical than this. I know they are all on something. I accept it. The only people who are every truly shocked and outraged are the ones who follow cycling once a year for the last decade.

It sounds like he has a good case to me.

Yep. Exact.

You think ALL of them are still on something? Really?

And as for this case, stories today indicate a trace of a very obvious drug -- a drug often used by cattle ranchers to pump up their herd -- was found the day after Contador ate a steak. Unless he's found with some other more high-tech substance, I'm willing to give him a pass. And I can't stand the prick.

ALL, probably not. That's too much of a blanket.

But I'd say there is a better chance than not the GC guys have some kinda help that nature didn't provide.

As for his excuse about the beef, he's had a long time to cook up a cover story.

Does the rest of his team eat with him? If so, they should all test positive.

I still say he's innocent...

The report gives the concentration of Clenbuterol in the Spaniard's sample as 50 picograms/ml, a value 40 times (not 400 as stated by the UCI) below the value that the laboratory should be able to detect.

De Boer also calls into question the lab's declaring an Adverse Analytical Finding for such a low amount, and argues that 50pg is 180 times less than the amount shown to induce physical effects by the drug.

The report states that Contador showed no traces of the drug on July 19 and 20. After finding 50pg/ml on the 21st, his sample from the next day showed 20pg/ml and then only traces on the following two days.

So he ingested a trace amount of an obvious, detectable drug during a 24-hour period during which he knew he would be tested. My conclusion is that he's really, really bad at cheating or he's telling the truth.

Working entirely from memory, wasn't that the exact same story Landis gave? I remember hearing he had tested for such an obvious drug at such an obvious time, he'd have had to have been an idiot to have actually cheated so stupidly.

Well, he was an idiot.
