Columnist: http://apsportseditors.org/jobs-internships/help-wanted/sports-columnist-winston-salem-n-c-journal/

The Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal is looking for a sports columnist with top-of-the-line writing skills and the ability to present commentary based on reporting rather than just personal opinion, to write on deadline and to produce three strong columns a week on sports issues across our coverage spectrum, which includes local and state sports teams.

The successful candidate will have at least five years of sports reporting experience and at least two years of experience writing columns on a regular basis. Our retired sports columnist left huge shoes to fill, and this is a critical job on our sports staff.

Just became a World Media Enterprise shop, which is Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett. Considering how he wants to invest in newspapers and isn't shying away from it, this looks like a pretty good gig.

Like the other WME jobs posted here recently, this listing on the company's actual site is a little more than a month old. Not sure if this one has already been filled (most of the similar WME openings I've checked in on recently have been), but I would imagine the Journal is at least fairly well into the process by now.

Didn't B-H already close one newspaper?

Has to be much better than the cretinous death grip of Media General.

You'd think that, but don't bet on it ...
Based on what happened to you I certainly respect your take on this. It carries some weight.

I applied for this position, however I'm from out of state. Any ideas on how to get an interview if I'm an out of state candidate?

Did Mason Linker leave? Or did he move up the ladder?
Mason has not left. The columnist position would be a promotion. The other position would, I believe, report to him as he is their lead guy on preps. With that being said, I don't know if he is going for columnist position.

The sports writer position is to replace Bill Cole, the Journal's college basketball and recruiting writer, who retired several months ago ... the position is being revamped to be more of a preps guy, allowing Mason to branch out and do more GA work ...

I see. I had forgotten about Bill Cole retiring. The revamping of the position makes sense.

C'mon, mate. Not rocket science. Write/call/email, tell 'em that you are interested and will pay your own way for an interview if necessary (been there, done that). If you're the guy and willing to move, it won't matter if you're out of state.

Don't pay your way for an interview in-state or out-of-state. If they're too damn cheap to do that, you can rest assured you will take it up the ass financially the whole time you are there. If you're not worth a couple extra bucks to yourself to pay for the interview, they sure as hell won't spend them on you. No job is worth that.

Any update on this one? I haven't gotten a rejection letter -- yet. :P

Talked to some people there a couple weeks ago, and they had just started going through all the resumes ... this one may take a while, but should be filled before the start of football (high school and college) season ...

Scott Hamilton got the columnist gig. He was hired in January as a GA reporter in news and will make the switch in June. He used to write for Golf Digest and Wilmington Daily Star.

Sports writer position still not filled.
