All right, fellas. I want to get good at a board game, just as a little challenge.

Which one do I choose? Why?

Chess.

Why?
-Strategy
-Skill
-Different approaches
-Analysis
-Mind games

Checkmate.

No help here. I suck at Scrabble and have no idea how to play chess.

Scrabble. It helps you become a better writer, moreso than chess. Unless you plan on having a future as a chess writer.

Scattegories! But I have to go with Scrabble - takes less time and causes fewer headaches than Chess. Plus, Scrabble allows for a little more humor and dirty nonsense.

You'd have a better chance at getting deeper into a national tournament in Scrabble than chess. So, Scrabble.

Have you seen a Scrabble tournament? The words they come up with are insane.

Scrabble is more about placement than the insane words. Having insane words helps, because the points can add up, but it all depends on where you put the letters.

Read "Word Freak" by Stefan Fatsis if you want to understand what it takes to play Scrabble at a top level. Freaky stuff.

What do you mean by "Get good"? If you want to play chess reasonably well, it'll take a lot of time and work.

Wouldn't that make Scrabble more difficult? They make these crazy words no matter what letters are out there.

Better chance you'll run into a hot chick playing Scrabble.

Beg to differ. My first chess tournament I played smoking hot foreign chick in one of the rounds.

Scrabble is crazy.
There are a lot of great sites to play online and if you're going to get serious here's some advice - memorize all the two-letter words (a must) and most, if not all, of the three letter words.
Bascially, to be good at Scrabble it's not about spelling five letter words. It's about three letters at a time and bingos (when you use all your letters).
My favorite scrabble word ever - because it gets challenged all the time - is zaire. It's Zaire's version of the dollar.

The English language is difficult as is, but Scrabble makes it a bit tougher. Regardless, I think chess has a steeper learning curve and has infinite combinations to win.
